Health Experts Warn Against Habitual Urine Retention Due to Risks to Bladder and Kidneys

Share this:

Health professionals have cautioned that frequently delaying urination for long periods may negatively affect the urinary system, increasing the risk of infections, bladder dysfunction, and kidney-related complications.

The urinary system, which includes the kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra, is responsible for filtering waste and excess fluids from the body and eliminating them through urine. The bladder temporarily stores urine before it is expelled from the body.

While occasional delays in using the restroom are generally not considered harmful, experts note that consistently ignoring the urge to urinate can place unnecessary stress on the bladder and disrupt normal urinary function.

How the Bladder Is Affected

Medical specialists explain that the bladder is a flexible muscular organ that expands as it fills with urine. As it stretches, nerve signals alert the brain, creating the urge to urinate.

When this urge is repeatedly ignored, the bladder is forced to hold urine beyond its normal capacity, which may weaken its muscles over time. This can eventually affect bladder control and increase the likelihood of urinary incontinence.

Prolonged urine retention may also contribute to the accumulation of waste particles in the bladder, which can increase the risk of kidney stone formation.

In severe cases, excessive bladder pressure may affect urine flow between the bladder and kidneys, potentially leading to complications in the upper urinary tract.

Increased Risk of Infections and Reduced Bladder Sensitivity

Health experts also warn that holding urine for too long can create an environment that encourages bacterial growth, increasing the risk of urinary tract infections (UTIs).

Repeatedly ignoring the urge to urinate may also reduce the bladder’s natural sensitivity to fullness, making it harder for individuals to recognise when they need to empty it.

Warning Signs of Complications

Possible symptoms linked to poor bladder habits include pain or burning during urination, lower abdominal or pelvic discomfort, frequent urges to urinate, difficulty fully emptying the bladder, and involuntary urine leakage.

These signs may indicate underlying urinary tract issues that require medical attention if they persist.

Prevention and Safe Practice

Health professionals advise that individuals should not delay urination for extended periods and should respond promptly to the body’s natural signals.

Although adults can typically hold urine for several hours without immediate harm, regularly ignoring the urge may increase long-term health risks affecting both the bladder and kidneys.
