Health Experts Warn That Long Periods of Sitting Can Harm Overall Health

Health experts are encouraging Nigerians to reduce the amount of time they spend sitting each day, warning that prolonged sitting has been linked to an increased risk of several chronic health conditions, even among people who exercise regularly.

According to medical professionals, sitting for extended periods slows the body’s metabolism and reduces muscle activity, making it more difficult to regulate blood sugar, blood pressure, and fat metabolism. Over time, this can contribute to the development of serious health problems.

Doctors explain that modern lifestyles have made prolonged sitting increasingly common. Many people spend hours sitting at desks, driving, watching television, or using computers and mobile devices without taking regular breaks. This lack of movement can have negative effects on both physical and mental health.

Health experts say research has associated prolonged sitting with an increased risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, certain cancers, and premature death. Long periods of inactivity may also contribute to poor posture, back pain, neck pain, muscle stiffness, and reduced flexibility.

Medical professionals note that sitting for several hours without moving can also affect blood circulation, increasing the risk of developing blood clots in the legs, particularly in individuals who are already at higher risk due to age, surgery, pregnancy, or certain medical conditions.

Doctors recommend breaking up long periods of sitting by standing, stretching, or walking for a few minutes every 30 to 60 minutes. Simple activities such as walking to speak with a colleague, using the stairs instead of the lift, or taking short walks during work breaks can help improve circulation and reduce the health risks associated with prolonged inactivity.

Experts also encourage individuals to include regular physical activity in their daily routines. Brisk walking, cycling, swimming, dancing, or other moderate forms of exercise can help offset some of the harmful effects of a sedentary lifestyle when performed consistently.

Health professionals advise employers and educational institutions to promote healthy workplace and classroom habits by encouraging movement breaks, providing adjustable workstations where possible, and creating environments that support physical activity throughout the day.

Doctors emphasize that maintaining a healthy lifestyle involves more than scheduled exercise. Eating a balanced diet, staying hydrated, getting enough sleep, managing stress, and reducing prolonged sitting all work together to improve long-term health and lower the risk of chronic diseases.

Medical experts conclude that reducing sedentary behaviour is an important step toward better health. They encourage Nigerians to make movement a regular part of their day, noting that small changes in daily habits can have significant benefits for overall well-being and disease prevention.
