Medical Professionals Advise Against Ignoring Persistent Swollen Lymph Nodes

Health experts are advising Nigerians not to ignore swollen lymph nodes that persist for several weeks, warning that while they are often a normal response to infection, they can sometimes indicate a more serious underlying medical condition.

According to medical professionals, lymph nodes are small, bean-shaped glands that form part of the body’s immune system. They help filter harmful substances and play an important role in fighting infections caused by bacteria, viruses, and other germs.

Doctors explain that lymph nodes are commonly found in the neck, under the arms, and in the groin. They may become swollen or tender when the body is responding to infections such as the common cold, sore throat, ear infections, or skin infections. In many cases, the swelling subsides once the infection has been treated or resolved.

Health experts caution, however, that swollen lymph nodes that continue to enlarge, remain swollen for several weeks, or occur without an obvious infection should be assessed by a healthcare professional. Persistent swelling may sometimes be associated with autoimmune diseases, tuberculosis, certain viral infections, or, in rare cases, cancers affecting the lymphatic system or other parts of the body.

Medical professionals advise the public to seek prompt medical attention if swollen lymph nodes are accompanied by symptoms such as persistent fever, night sweats, unexplained weight loss, difficulty swallowing, persistent cough, severe fatigue, or swollen nodes that are hard, painless, or fixed in place.

Doctors discourage individuals from attempting to diagnose or treat swollen lymph nodes on their own using herbal remedies, antibiotics, or other medications without professional advice. Self-medication may delay the diagnosis of the underlying cause and reduce the effectiveness of appropriate treatment.

Experts explain that a healthcare provider may perform a physical examination and recommend further investigations if necessary. These may include blood tests, imaging studies, or, in some cases, a biopsy to determine the cause of the swelling.

Health professionals emphasize that maintaining good hygiene, staying up to date with recommended vaccinations, and seeking early treatment for infections can help reduce the risk of conditions that commonly cause swollen lymph nodes.

Doctors also advise people with weakened immune systems or chronic medical conditions to attend regular medical appointments and report any unusual or persistent swelling to their healthcare provider as soon as possible.

Medical experts conclude that although swollen lymph nodes are often harmless and temporary, persistent swelling should never be ignored. They encourage Nigerians to seek timely medical evaluation whenever swollen lymph nodes do not improve or are accompanied by other concerning symptoms, as early diagnosis can lead to more effective treatment and better health outcomes.
