Heat, Discomfort Hit ADC Convention as ACs Fail to work

Tensions and discomfort marked the opening of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) convention in Abuja on Tuesday, after a failure of air conditioning systems left delegates struggling in the heat.

The event, taking place at the Rainbow Event Centre, had already faced setbacks before proceedings began.

Party officials said they were earlier denied access to both the Eagle Square and the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, forcing a last-minute change of venue.

Adding to the controversy, the party’s national publicity secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, alleged that the management of the new venue had come under pressure to cancel the booking.

Speaking at the scene, former Kogi senator Dino Melaye expressed frustration over the situation, insisting the convention would go ahead regardless of the obstacles.

“We are using this place by force,” he said, referring to the difficulties accessing and operating facilities at the venue.

Melaye explained that despite paying for the space and completing contractual agreements, organisers were unable to immediately activate the central air conditioning system, leaving attendees in uncomfortable conditions.

Efforts were underway to resolve the issue, with additional cooling measures, including fans, being brought in to ease the heat.

He maintained that the event would not be derailed, even under less-than-ideal circumstances.

“Even if it is in a motor park, the convention will hold,” he said, underscoring the party’s determination to proceed despite what it sees as deliberate attempts to disrupt the gathering.
