Ijaw youth accuse political forces of plotting to silence Fubara in 2027

Rivers, Nigeria – The Ijaw Youth Council Worldwide has strongly opposed any attempt to force Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, into accepting a single-term agreement as part of his political reinstatement.
Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) reports that the President of the Ijaw Youth Council, Theophilus Alaye, made this declaration during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Tuesday.
Alaye maintained that Governor Fubara is constitutionally entitled to seek a second term in 2027, just like any other Nigerian citizen.
He insisted that no political agreement or interference should undermine that right.
The Ijaw Youth Council’s position follows emerging reports suggesting that part of the conditions for lifting the suspension on Governor Fubara was a pledge not to run for re-election in the forthcoming general election.
Alaye flatly rejected the idea, describing such a proposal as political oppression and a violation of Fubara’s fundamental rights under the Nigerian Constitution.
“We are not going to be part of any single-term deal for Governor Fubara,” Alaye stated firmly.
He stressed that only the people of Rivers State possess the authority to determine their governor’s political fate.
He added that if Fubara fulfills his duties and delivers the dividends of democracy, the people themselves would decide whether to support him for a second term.
“If he has delivered the dividends of democracy for Rivers people, it is left for Rivers people to ask him to contest or not,” Alaye asserted.
He warned that no one, including the governor’s predecessor, Nyesom Wike, or any political stakeholder, should coerce Fubara into giving up his right to contest.
Alaye emphasized that the Ijaw people, as a historically marginalized group, have always stood against oppression and would continue to resist any political maneuver intended to silence or limit the governor.
He reiterated that the Ijaw Youth Council would continue to support Fubara if he chooses to run again in 2027.
Alaye noted, “Oppression is what we would never support. We have always been a group of marginalised persons and agitation has always been part of our lifestyle.”
It will be recalled that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State in March 2025, suspending Governor Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and the members of the state House of Assembly due to escalating political tensions.
By June, Tinubu brokered a peace deal between the warring factions, with all parties pledging to work toward reconciliation.
Despite this, lingering concerns remain over whether the peace deal contains hidden conditions that could impact Governor Fubara’s political future.
The Ijaw Youth Council has now made it clear that it will not stand by and allow any agreement that contravenes the governor’s constitutional rights to go unchallenged.
