Iran’s Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) said on Thursday that they had targeted a United States airbase in response to what Tehran described as an American strike near Bandar Abbas airport earlier in the day.
According to Iran’s Tasnim news agency, the attack on the US base took place around 4:50 a.m. local time.
The IRGC did not disclose the location of the base allegedly targeted.
The Guards accused Washington of carrying out an “aggressive” attack near the strategic southern Iranian city of Bandar Abbas, located close to the Strait of Hormuz one of the world’s most important oil shipping routes.
In a statement carried by Iranian media, the IRGC warned that any repeat of what it called US aggression would provoke a “more decisive” response.
It added that responsibility for any further escalation would lie with the “aggressor.”
The latest development marks another sharp escalation in tensions between Tehran and Washington despite ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at preserving a fragile ceasefire and negotiating a broader settlement to the regional conflict.
Bandar Abbas is a key military and commercial hub for Iran and sits near the Strait of Hormuz, where nearly a fifth of the world’s oil supplies normally pass.
There was no immediate official response from the United States regarding the IRGC’s claims.
