Israeli Prime Minister Dissolves War Cabinet
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has decided to dissolve the war cabinet and establish a new one, following the departure of Benny Gantz, the former defense minister and leader of a more moderate faction, from the emergency government.
The decision was made during a political-security cabinet meeting and is seen as a move to address the void left by Gantz’s resignation. Netanyahu’s far-right coalition allies, including Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, had been pushing for the formation of a new war cabinet composed of coalition party leaders.
Gantz’s resignation on June 9 came amid the ongoing war with the Palestinian militant group Hamas. He cited fundamental differences in the strategic approach and accused Netanyahu of preventing the achievement of “true victory” in the war on Gaza.
Netanyahu responded to Gantz’s resignation on social media, saying that now is not the time to abandon the war effort and that the country is in an existential war on several fronts. He added that his door remains open to any Zionist party willing to join forces and assist in achieving victory over Israel’s enemies.
The establishment of a new war cabinet is seen as a move to consolidate power and ensure a more unified approach to the conflict with Hamas. However, it remains to be seen how this will impact the ongoing war and the political landscape in Israel.
In related news, Netanyahu’s government has been facing criticism from opposition parties and some members of the public for its handling of the war. There have been calls for a more decisive victory over Hamas and concerns about the impact of the conflict on Israeli citizens.
The situation remains fluid and developments are being closely watched by the international community.
