Just in: Governor Fubara, Wike meet at Aso Rock amidst political crisis
DDM News

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, now Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, met at Aso Rock, Abuja, amidst ongoing political tensions that remain unresolved.
Reports from Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) indicate that the two leaders are at loggerheads over the control of political structures in Rivers State.
This discord has resulted in factions within the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the State Assembly.
The tensions escalated into impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara, initiated by the Rivers State House of Assembly loyal to Wike.
The meeting at Aso Rock, which included top government officials and stakeholders, reportedly focused on the Ogoni clean-up and the resumption of oil exploration in Ogoniland.
Four Local Government Areas in Rivers State are at the center of this development.
Governor Fubara attended the meeting with a delegation led by Senator Lee Maeba and notable Ogoni leaders.
These leaders included Senators Magnus Abe, Olaka Nwogu, Chief Victor Giadom, and Chief Kenneth Kobani.
Other key figures present were Monsignor Pius Kii, Leedom Mitee, and Senators Bennett Birabi Barry, Mpigi, and Joe Poroma.
Prominent federal officials also participated in the Aso Rock meeting.
These included the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, Mele Kyari, and the Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abba.
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Idris Mohammed, the Minister of Regional Development, Abubakar Momoh, and the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, were also in attendance.
In December 2023, President Bola Tinubu intervened in the Rivers State political crisis by calling a meeting at Aso Rock to mediate between the factions.
While resolutions were reached during that intervention, the issues persist.
Both camps have refused to cede control of critical political structures.
The latest meeting at Aso Rock is seen as another attempt to bridge the divide and address broader developmental concerns in Rivers State.
Particular focus was placed on the oil-rich Ogoni region.
The involvement of key Ogoni leaders and federal officials underscores the federal government’s interest in resolving the crisis and ensuring the smooth resumption of oil activities.
Although the outcome of the Aso Rock meeting remains unclear, stakeholders remain hopeful that it will provide a pathway toward lasting peace in Rivers State.
