YOLA, NIGERIA — Suspected gunmen have shot dead a pastor, Emmanuel Ezeoikwe, in Zinal village, Song Local Government Area of Adamawa State, prompting a police investigation into the deadly attack.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, April 21, 2026, at approximately 12:48 a.m., at the victim’s residence in Zinal village, while the case was formally reported to authorities around 6:30 a.m., according to the Adamawa State Police Command.
Police spokesperson Suleiman Nguroje confirmed that the attackers stormed the village under the cover of darkness and opened fire on the cleric, fatally wounding him during the assault. He stated that officers responded swiftly after receiving the report and moved to the scene.
Upon arrival, operatives found the victim’s lifeless body and immediately transported him to a nearby hospital, where a medical doctor confirmed him dead. The remains were later deposited in a morgue for further examination, including an autopsy.
Nguroje disclosed that three empty AK-47 shells were recovered at the scene, indicating that high-calibre firearms were used in carrying out the attack. The discovery has become a key part of the ongoing investigation.
The Commissioner of Police in Adamawa State, Kabir Hassan, has ordered a discreet and thorough investigation into the killing, directing tactical teams to track down and apprehend those responsible for the crime.
Security operatives have since intensified patrols and surveillance in the area as part of efforts to prevent further attacks and reassure residents. Authorities say the operation will continue until the perpetrators are brought to justice.
The police have also appealed to members of the public to remain calm and cooperate with law enforcement by providing credible information that could aid the investigation.
The killing has raised fresh concerns about security in parts of Adamawa State, where rural communities have occasionally experienced attacks by armed groups. Community leaders have called for increased protection and rapid response mechanisms to safeguard lives and property.
As investigations continue, residents of Zinal village and surrounding areas remain on alert, while authorities work to uncover the motive behind the attack and ensure accountability.
