The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has reiterated its long-standing claims that the prophecies made by its detained leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, regarding Nigeria’s political instability and security decline have come to pass.

In a press release issued by the group’s Media and Publicity Secretary, Comrade Emma Powerful, on Friday, April 11, 2025, IPOB emphasized that many of Kanu’s warnings over the years are now materializing across the country.

According to Diaspora digital media (DDM), the group called on the Federal Government to release him unconditionally, stating that his continued detention is unjust and politically motivated.

Kanu, the leader of IPOB, was arrested in 2021 and extradited from Kenya under controversial circumstances.

He has since remained in detention, facing charges related to his calls for the secession of southeastern Nigeria and the formation of an independent Biafran state.

The Nigerian government considers IPOB a proscribed group, accusing it of instigating unrest and promoting division within the country.

However, IPOB argues that Kanu is a freedom fighter whose words are being vindicated by the very events unfolding across Nigeria today.

The group pointed to his past public statements, broadcasts, and interviews, some of which date as far back as 2013 and 2014, where he warned about rising insecurity, national disunity, and the dangers of marginalization faced by various ethnic groups in the country.

In one such broadcast, which has resurfaced on social media, Kanu predicted a rise in armed conflict in the northern and central parts of Nigeria.

He warned about the potential emergence of multiple armed groups, particularly in areas plagued by poor governance, poverty, and ethnic tensions.

According to IPOB, current realities such as the activities of bandits, insurgents, and separatist militias in various regions mirror his earlier warnings.

“Recent events in Nigeria reflect what Mazi Nnamdi Kanu had long warned about,” the group stated.

“His concerns about insecurity, national disunity, and the marginalization of various ethnic groups have continued to unfold across the federation.”

Kanu had also warned that the failure of the Nigerian state to address issues of structural imbalance and political exclusion would result in an eventual collapse of national unity.

In speeches leading up to his arrest, he frequently emphasized that the forced amalgamation of diverse ethnic nationalities into a single political entity in 1914 laid the foundation for unending conflict and underdevelopment.

IPOB maintains that the country’s political structure is outdated and no longer serves the interests of its constituent groups.

The group has renewed its advocacy for a national dialogue that would allow for a peaceful renegotiation of Nigeria’s union, including the possibility of conducting referendums in different regions.

“We believe the lasting solution lies in giving ethnic nationalities the opportunity to decide their own paths,” the group said.

“This must be achieved through peaceful means and mutual respect.”

The organization also underscored its commitment to non-violence and constructive engagement, calling on both national and international stakeholders to support its demand for restructuring.

IPOB argues that a restructured Nigeria based on true federalism or even peaceful separation where necessary would create a more stable and prosperous environment for all.

“Those who ignore calls for dialogue are only postponing the inevitable,” IPOB warned.

“History shows that nations who refuse to engage in peaceful negotiations eventually face violent upheaval.”

Despite being branded a security threat by the government, IPOB insists that it is a peaceful movement working to defend the rights and dignity of the Igbo people and other marginalized ethnic groups.

The group has consistently denied involvement in violent activities, attributing such actions to impostors or provocateurs.

Kanu’s detention has remained a controversial issue both within and outside Nigeria.

Human rights groups, legal experts, and political observers have raised concerns about the legality of his extradition and the fairness of his trial.

IPOB has used these concerns to bolster its calls for his release, portraying him as a victim of political persecution.

In the latest statement, IPOB once again urged Nigerians across ethnic and religious lines to come together and confront the worsening security situation facing the nation.

The group believes that only a collective effort—built on equity, justice, and mutual recognition—can address Nigeria’s deep-rooted problems.

As insecurity continues to spread and public confidence in national leadership dwindles, IPOB says it will continue to push for peaceful and democratic means to achieve self-determination for the people of Biafra.

Meanwhile, it remains to be seen whether the government will reconsider its stance on dialogue or continue to pursue a legal path against Kanu and his movement.
