JUST IN: Protesters in Katsina wave Russian flags

on

Despite appeal by president Bola Tinubu, another round of protests have erupted in Katsina, with young youths taking to the streets and waving Russian flags.

The demonstrations are part of the ongoing #EndBadGovernance protests, which organizers have vowed will continue from August 1 to August 10.

Recall that Mr Tinubu in his nationwide broadcast on Sunday, urged the protesters to halt their actions and create room for dialogue with the government.

He stressed the importance of unity and progress, saying, “Let us work together to build a brighter future for ourselves and for generations to come. Let us choose hope over fear, unity over division, and progress over stagnation. The economy is recovering; please, don’t shut out its oxygen. Now that we have been enjoying democratic governance for 25 years, do not let the enemies of democracy use you to promote an unconstitutional agenda that will set us back on our democratic journey. Forward ever, backward never!”

Meanwhile, the use of Russian flags has gained momentum across protest sites after his address.

Russia, currently at odds with the West, has been linked to recent coups in West African countries such as Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger.

At the time of filing this report, protesters on Monday waving Russian flags were heard chanting in Hausa, “Hunger is killing us.” In response, police have begun trailing the demonstrators and firing tear gas to disperse them.
