KANO, Nigeria — The Kano State Government has approved the sum of ₦1.5 billion for the conduct of a mass wedding programme expected to benefit 3,000 couples across the state as part of efforts aimed at supporting marriage and strengthening family values.

The initiative, one of the largest of its kind in the country, will provide financial and material support to participating couples, including the payment of dowries, provision of household items, and other welfare packages designed to ease the financial burden associated with marriage.

Under the programme, the state government will reportedly provide furniture and essential household materials for newly married couples. In addition, each bride is expected to receive ₦100,000 as part of the support package approved for the exercise.

State officials said the mass wedding programme forms part of broader social intervention efforts intended to assist vulnerable residents and promote social stability. The initiative is also expected to help reduce financial obstacles that often delay marriages among young people, particularly those from low-income backgrounds.

According to the government, beneficiaries will undergo screening and verification processes to ensure that only eligible participants are included in the programme. Relevant agencies and religious authorities are also expected to play key roles in coordinating and supervising the exercise.

The mass wedding scheme has become a recurring feature in Kano State over the years, with previous administrations implementing similar programmes aimed at supporting residents and encouraging lawful marriages. Supporters of the initiative argue that it provides relief for families struggling with the rising cost of living and marriage-related expenses.

Officials noted that beyond the wedding ceremonies themselves, participating couples would also receive guidance and counselling designed to promote stable family relationships and responsible marital conduct. Health screening and other pre-marital requirements are also expected to form part of the process.

The approval comes at a time when many households across the country are facing economic challenges linked to inflation and rising living costs. Government representatives said the intervention demonstrates a commitment to improving social welfare and supporting citizens in meeting important life milestones.

However, the allocation has also generated public debate, with some observers questioning whether such funds could be directed toward other pressing needs such as education, healthcare, infrastructure, and job creation. Others have defended the programme, arguing that family support initiatives remain an important aspect of social development and community welfare.

Despite differing opinions, state authorities insist that the programme will deliver significant social benefits and contribute to stronger family structures across Kano. Preparations for the mass wedding are expected to begin immediately, with relevant agencies tasked with ensuring transparency and successful implementation.

The planned ceremony is anticipated to attract thousands of participants, community leaders, religious scholars, and government officials, making it one of the largest state-sponsored marriage programmes in Nigeria this year. As arrangements continue, attention will focus on how the initiative impacts beneficiaries and broader discussions about social welfare spending in the country.
