Kenya’s Kibet wins 2025 Lagos City Marathon

Kenyan long-distance runner Edwin Kibet Koech has once again proven his dominance in the world of marathon racing by winning the 2025 Access Bank Lagos City Marathon.
This victory marks his second consecutive win in the event, having previously clinched the title in 2023.
Kibet completed the 42-kilometer race in an impressive time of 2 hours and 14 minutes, securing the $50,000 first-place prize in the men’s category.
The 2025 edition of the Lagos City Marathon saw a record-breaking participation of approximately 37,000 runners competing in both the 10km and 42km races.
According to Yusuf Ali, the General Manager of the marathon and a retired Nigerian long jumper, the number of participants was determined based on the distribution of running kits, with over 60,000 runners initially registering for the event.
The marathon, which began at 6:30 am, kicked off at the National Stadium in Surulere, Lagos, while the 10km race started at 9:30 am from the Grace Garden Event Centre in Lekki.
Both races concluded at the iconic Eko Atlantic City, drawing thousands of spectators and supporters who lined the streets to cheer on the athletes.
*A Decade of Excellence
The Access Bank Lagos City Marathon, which was first held in 2016, is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year.
Over the past decade, the event has grown in stature and prestige, earning a World Athletics gold label.
The organizers have now set their sights on achieving the platinum label, which would make it the first marathon in Africa to attain such a status.
The Lagos State Government played a significant role in ensuring the smooth execution of the event.
In preparation for the marathon, the government announced an eight-hour road closure and traffic diversion along key routes between 5:00 am and 1:00 pm.
This measure was implemented to guarantee the safety of the participants and spectators while minimizing disruptions to the city’s traffic flow.
*A Platform for Global and Local Talent
The Access Bank Lagos City Marathon has become a significant event on the global athletics calendar, attracting elite runners from around the world as well as local talent.
The 2025 edition featured participants from over 30 countries, showcasing the event’s growing international appeal.
In addition to the professional athletes, the marathon also provided an opportunity for amateur runners to participate, promoting fitness and healthy living among Lagos residents.
The marathon’s organizers have consistently emphasized the importance of inclusivity and community engagement.
This year’s event included a range of activities designed to encourage participation from all segments of society, including special categories for wheelchair athletes and visually impaired runners.
*Looking Ahead:
As the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon enters its second decade, the organizers are focused on further elevating the event’s profile.
Achieving the World Athletics platinum label is a key objective, as it would place the marathon among the elite ranks of global racing events.
The platinum label is awarded to marathons that meet stringent criteria related to organization, athlete participation, and media coverage.
In addition to its athletic significance, the Lagos City Marathon has also become a platform for promoting tourism and economic development in Lagos.
The event attracts thousands of visitors to the city each year, boosting local businesses and showcasing Lagos as a vibrant and dynamic destination.
