There was mild drama in the Nigerian Senate on Thursday as Senator Ireti Kingibe, the lawmaker representing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), stormed out of plenary after what she described as an attempt to stop her from presenting a motion.

The lawmaker was initially scheduled to present the motion on Wednesday, but time constraints pushed her presentation to Thursday.

An argument erupted over whether she should be allowed to present the motion, as it was not listed on the Order Paper.

This led to a heated exchange, resulting in the senator walking out of the chamber.

The situation was later brought under control when other senators, including Asuquo Ekpenyong, Oyelola Ashiru, and others intervened and pleaded with the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio to allow the senator to return and present her motion.

Moreover, after some minutes, Kingibe returned to the chamber and was directed by the Senate President to apologise for her actions.

Initially, she refused to apologise but later capitulated after Akpabio’s insistence.

Addressing the Senate, Kingibe said the Federal Capital Territory Administration on the instruction of FCT Minister, Mr. Nyesom Wike embarked on massive demolition of structures in the FCT.

While expressing concern over what she called illegal demolition of structures, the lawmaker argued that the current demolition was not in line with due process of court orders and that some persons have suffered untold hardship and loss of properties worth billions of naira.

Kingibe immediately called for an immediate stop to further demolitions.

The Senate, thereafter, resolved to constitute an investigative panel to look into the demolitions and report back to it within a specified timeframe.
