Madugu Demands More from Super Falcons Despite Victory as Nigeria Intensifies WAFCON Preparations

Super Falcons head coach Justine Madugu has challenged his players to raise their performance levels despite securing victory in their latest international outing, insisting that Nigeria still has important areas to improve before the start of the upcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

The Nigerian women’s national team recently recorded an encouraging win in one of their final preparatory matches ahead of the continental showpiece, but Madugu believes the result alone should not distract from the lessons that need to be learned as the team continues its quest for another African title.

Speaking after the match, the coach acknowledged that while the victory provided confidence and momentum, it also exposed certain weaknesses that must be addressed if the Super Falcons are to achieve their objectives at the tournament.

His comments underline the growing determination within the camp to ensure Nigeria arrives at the championship fully prepared for what is expected to be one of the most competitive editions of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in recent history.

For a team with the rich history and pedigree of the Super Falcons, expectations are always exceptionally high. Nigeria remains the most successful nation in African women’s football, having won multiple continental titles and produced generations of talented players who have dominated the game across the continent.

However, Madugu believes past achievements alone will not guarantee future success.

According to the coach, modern women’s football has evolved significantly, with several African countries investing heavily in player development, coaching, infrastructure, and grassroots programmes. As a result, the gap between Nigeria and other leading nations has narrowed considerably.

Countries such as South Africa, Morocco, and Zambia have emerged as genuine contenders in recent years, making every match at the tournament increasingly challenging.

Madugu stressed that the Super Falcons cannot afford to become complacent if they hope to maintain their dominance.

The coach noted that although the team displayed flashes of quality during the recent victory, there were moments when concentration levels dropped and opportunities were not converted efficiently. He explained that football at the highest level is often decided by small details, and those details can make the difference between lifting a trophy and suffering disappointment.

One of the major positives from the match was the attacking display shown by several members of the squad. Nigeria created numerous chances and demonstrated the pace and technical ability that have long been trademarks of the Super Falcons.

Yet the coaching crew believes there is still room for improvement in decision-making, finishing, and overall coordination in the final third.

The technical team is also focusing on strengthening defensive organization. While the team has traditionally been known for its attacking power, maintaining a solid defensive structure will be equally important against stronger opposition during the tournament.

Madugu and his assistants have spent months evaluating players and experimenting with different tactical systems aimed at improving the squad’s balance.

Another encouraging aspect of the current Super Falcons squad is the blend of experience and youth.

The team continues to benefit from the leadership of established stars such as Rasheedat Ajibade, whose influence both on and off the pitch remains invaluable. The squad also boasts world-class talents like Chiamaka Nnadozie, widely regarded as one of Africa’s finest goalkeepers.

Alongside these experienced players are a number of younger talents eager to make their mark on the international stage. Their energy, ambition, and hunger for success have added fresh competition within the squad, creating a healthy environment that encourages continuous improvement.

Madugu believes this combination of youth and experience could prove crucial during the demanding tournament schedule.

Preparations for WAFCON have not been without challenges. The coaching staff has previously spoken about difficulties in arranging high-quality international friendlies, with some teams reportedly reluctant to face Nigeria because of the Super Falcons’ reputation and track record.

Despite these obstacles, the technical crew has remained committed to ensuring the players receive adequate preparation before the tournament begins.

Training sessions have focused heavily on tactical discipline, physical conditioning, teamwork, and match awareness. The coaching staff is also paying close attention to player fitness, knowing that injuries can significantly affect a team’s chances in major competitions.

For Nigerian supporters, Madugu’s honest assessment of the team’s current level may come as a positive sign. Rather than becoming satisfied with victories in preparatory matches, the coach is clearly focused on achieving sustained excellence and ensuring that the Super Falcons continue to set the standard in African women’s football.

His willingness to identify weaknesses publicly reflects a commitment to accountability and continuous development. It also sends a message to players that competition for places remains fierce and that no one can afford to relax ahead of the tournament.

As the countdown to WAFCON continues, anticipation is building among football fans across Nigeria. The Super Falcons carry not only the hopes of a nation but also the responsibility of defending their status as Africa’s most successful women’s football team.

The road to another continental title will not be easy, but the team’s preparation, talent, and winning mentality provide reasons for optimism.

For Madugu, however, the mission remains clear. Victory in friendly matches is encouraging, but true success will depend on how effectively the Super Falcons improve, adapt, and perform when the stakes are highest.

If Nigeria can successfully address the areas highlighted by their coach, the Super Falcons may once again be poised to write another glorious chapter in the history of African women’s football.
