Morocco’s stunning victory over the Netherlands at the 2026 FIFA World Cup sparked emotional celebrations across the globe, particularly in the Netherlands where hundreds of thousands of people of Moroccan descent gathered to celebrate their national team’s remarkable achievement. However, what began as joyous street festivities in several Dutch cities later turned tense as isolated incidents of unrest resulted in dozens of arrests and clashes with police.

The Atlas Lions secured one of the biggest victories of the tournament after defeating the Netherlands 3-2 in a dramatic penalty shootout following a pulsating 1-1 draw after 120 minutes. The result sent Morocco into the Round of 16 while bringing an abrupt end to the Netherlands’ World Cup campaign.

For Morocco, the victory represented much more than qualification for the next stage of the tournament. It was another statement that the North African nation has firmly established itself among the elite teams in world football after its historic semifinal appearance at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

The Round of 32 encounter delivered excitement from the opening whistle.

Both sides approached the game cautiously, knowing that a place in the last 16 was at stake. Morocco relied on its disciplined defensive structure and quick counterattacks, while the Netherlands dominated possession through its experienced midfield led by Frenkie de Jong and Tijjani Reijnders.

Morocco created the better chances during the first half through Brahim Diaz and Soufiane Rahimi, but Dutch goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen remained alert to deny the Atlas Lions an early breakthrough.

At the other end, Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou produced a series of confident saves to frustrate Dutch attackers Cody Gakpo and Donyell Malen, ensuring the first half ended without a goal.

The contest came alive after the restart.

The Netherlands finally broke the deadlock in the 72nd minute when Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo received an intelligent pass inside the penalty area before calmly placing his finish beyond Bounou to make it 1-0.

The goal appeared to have put Ronald Koeman’s side on course for qualification, with Dutch supporters inside the stadium celebrating what looked like the decisive moment of the match.

Morocco, however, refused to accept defeat.

Coach Walid Regragui made attacking substitutions that transformed the momentum of the game. The Atlas Lions pressed relentlessly in the closing stages, forcing the Netherlands deeper into their own half as they searched desperately for an equaliser.

Their determination was rewarded in dramatic fashion during the 90+7th minute.

Defender Issa Diop rose highest inside the penalty area to head home from a well-delivered cross, sending Moroccan fans into wild celebrations and stunning the Dutch players, who had been only moments away from qualification.

The late equaliser forced the game into extra time.

During the additional 30 minutes, both teams pushed for a winner.

Morocco looked dangerous on the counterattack through Brahim Diaz and Ismael Saibari, while the Netherlands continued to threaten through Cody Gakpo and substitute attackers.

Goalkeepers Yassine Bounou and Bart Verbruggen both produced outstanding saves during extra time, keeping the scores level and setting up a tense penalty shootout.

The shootout once again highlighted Morocco’s incredible composure under pressure.

Although captain Achraf Hakimi missed one of Morocco’s penalties, Yassine Bounou emerged as the hero by making a crucial save that shifted momentum in Morocco’s favour.

Midfielder Ismael Saibari then confidently converted the decisive penalty to secure a 3-2 shootout victory, sending Moroccan players and supporters into emotional celebrations.

The remarkable win immediately triggered celebrations in Morocco and among Moroccan communities living across Europe.

In the Netherlands, thousands of supporters carrying Moroccan flags gathered in city centres, dancing, singing and sounding car horns as they celebrated the national team’s qualification.

Large crowds assembled in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague, Utrecht, Eindhoven and several other Dutch cities where sizeable Moroccan communities reside.

While the overwhelming majority of fans celebrated peacefully, authorities reported that isolated groups engaged in disorder after the match.

According to Dutch police, some individuals threw fireworks, bottles and other objects at officers, while incidents of vandalism and damage to public property were also reported.

Law enforcement agencies responded by deploying additional officers to affected areas to restore calm and prevent the disturbances from spreading.

Several roads were temporarily closed while emergency services monitored the situation throughout the night.

Police confirmed that dozens of people were arrested in connection with offences including public disorder, vandalism and failing to obey police instructions.

Authorities also stated that investigations would continue through the review of surveillance footage to identify individuals responsible for criminal acts committed during the celebrations.

Dutch officials were quick to distinguish between the peaceful celebrations enjoyed by thousands of supporters and the actions of the small number of individuals involved in violence.

Community leaders equally appealed for restraint, urging football supporters to celebrate responsibly and respect public safety while enjoying the historic sporting achievement.

For Morocco, the victory further strengthened the nation’s growing reputation as one of the strongest football teams outside Europe and South America.

Since reaching the semifinals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the Atlas Lions have continued to prove that their success was no coincidence.

Under Walid Regragui, Morocco has built a squad that combines experienced leaders such as Achraf Hakimi, Yassine Bounou and Sofyan Amrabat with talented younger players including Brahim Diaz and Ismael Saibari.

Their tactical discipline, defensive organisation and mental strength have made them one of the most difficult teams to defeat in international football.

As Morocco prepares for its Round of 16 clash against Canada, confidence within the squad continues to soar.

Although the celebrations following the victory were overshadowed in some areas by isolated disturbances and arrests, the overwhelming story remains Morocco’s remarkable achievement on the football pitch.

The Atlas Lions have once again united millions of supporters around the world, inspiring pride across Africa and the global Moroccan community while keeping alive their dream of another memorable FIFA World Cup campaign.
