Doctors Explain Why Proper Handwashing Technique Matters in Disease Prevention

Health experts are reminding Nigerians that proper handwashing is one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of infectious diseases, stressing that technique is just as important as frequency.

According to medical professionals, hands often come into contact with contaminated surfaces, objects, and bodily fluids throughout the day. Germs such as bacteria and viruses can easily transfer from the hands to the mouth, nose, eyes, or food, leading to infections.

Doctors explain that proper handwashing involves more than just rinsing with water. Hands should be washed with clean running water and soap for at least 20 seconds, ensuring that all areas, including between fingers, under nails, and the backs of hands, are thoroughly cleaned.

Health experts note that effective hand hygiene is essential in preventing illnesses such as diarrhoea, respiratory infections, flu, and other communicable diseases. It is especially important before eating, after using the toilet, after coughing or sneezing, and after handling waste or raw food.

Medical professionals advise individuals to avoid skipping soap, as water alone is not sufficient to remove oils and germs that stick to the skin. Soap helps break down and remove these microorganisms more effectively.

Doctors also encourage the use of alcohol-based hand sanitizers when soap and water are not available, although handwashing with soap remains the preferred method when possible.

Experts recommend teaching children proper handwashing techniques early, as good hygiene habits formed in childhood can significantly reduce the risk of infections later in life.

Health professionals caution against touching the face frequently with unwashed hands, as this increases the risk of germs entering the body through the eyes, nose, or mouth.

Doctors emphasize the importance of hand hygiene in healthcare settings, food preparation areas, and crowded environments where the risk of disease transmission is higher.

Medical experts conclude that proper handwashing technique is a simple but powerful tool for disease prevention. They encourage Nigerians to practice regular and thorough hand hygiene to protect themselves and others from preventable infections.
