ABUJA, NIGERIA – The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has confirmed that its presidential and other primary elections will proceed nationwide on May 29 despite the Eid-el-Kabir public holidays and concerns over possible logistical challenges.

The party leadership stated that all preparations for the primaries have already reached advanced stages, insisting that the exercise would go ahead as scheduled across various states and constituencies.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) reports that the decision comes amid growing discussions among party members and stakeholders over the timing of the primaries, which coincides with one of the major Islamic celebrations observed across Nigeria.

The Nigeria Democratic Congress maintained that postponing the exercise could disrupt the party’s internal timetable and affect preparations for upcoming elections.

Concerns Over Eid-El-Kabir Holiday Logistics

Some party members and observers had earlier raised concerns that the Eid-el-Kabir holidays could create transportation difficulties and reduce participation in some parts of the country.

There were also concerns that heavy travel movements associated with the festive period might affect coordination of delegates, electoral officials, and security arrangements during the primaries.

However, party officials insisted that adequate measures have been put in place to ensure smooth conduct of the elections despite the holiday activities.

According to the party, electoral materials and logistics deployment plans have already been finalized to avoid unnecessary delays or disruptions.

Commitment To Internal Democratic Process

The NDC leadership emphasized that conducting the primaries as planned demonstrates the party’s commitment to its internal democratic process and constitutional guidelines.

Officials noted that all aspirants and stakeholders had been informed of the timetable well in advance and preparations were already ongoing at different levels of the party structure.

The party also reassured members that security agencies and election monitors would be adequately engaged to maintain order and credibility during the exercise.

Political analysts observed that party primaries remain critical stages in Nigeria’s electoral process because they determine candidates who eventually contest in general elections.

Importance Of The Primaries

Observers further noted that successful conduct of the primaries could strengthen confidence among party supporters and project the NDC as an organized political platform ahead of future elections.

They added that internal disputes arising from poorly managed primaries have historically contributed to divisions within several political parties in Nigeria.

The NDC leadership therefore urged members to remain peaceful, disciplined, and committed to democratic principles throughout the exercise.

Party officials also appealed to aspirants and supporters to accept the outcome of the primaries in good faith and avoid actions capable of causing tension or violence.

Looking Ahead

The party expressed optimism that the May 29 primaries would be conducted successfully across the country despite the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations and other logistical pressures.

It reiterated its commitment to transparent and inclusive candidate selection processes as preparations continue for future national and state elections.
