The Federal Government has strengthened health surveillance measures at airports, seaports, and land borders nationwide following concerns over a renewed Ebola outbreak reported in parts of East and Central Africa.
The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare announced the implementation of enhanced screening protocols aimed at preventing the entry of the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus into the country.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the ministry clarified that no Ebola cases have been confirmed in Nigeria. However, authorities said proactive measures have been activated across the country to bolster preparedness and protect public health.
According to the ministry, travellers considered high-risk or displaying symptoms associated with Ebola and other viral haemorrhagic fevers will be subjected to additional screening procedures. These measures include isolation where necessary and referral to appropriate health facilities for further evaluation.
Health authorities have also introduced mandatory temperature checks, health declaration requirements, travel history reviews, and enhanced risk assessment procedures at designated points of entry.
The ministry stated that disease surveillance systems have been reinforced nationwide through intensified monitoring activities, expanded community-based surveillance networks, and continuous tracking of public health alerts.
As part of the preparedness strategy, Public Health Emergency Operations Centres have been activated, while Rapid Response Teams at both national and state levels have been placed on alert to respond swiftly to any suspected cases.
Officials emphasized that the measures are precautionary and urged the public to remain vigilant while adhering to public health guidelines designed to prevent the spread of infectious diseases.
The government reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the health of Nigerians through early detection, rapid response, and strengthened border health security as regional health authorities continue to monitor the evolving Ebola situation across affected African countries.
