Former Super Eagles striker Obafemi Martins has expressed strong confidence in the next generation of Nigerian footballers, stating that several young talents discovered at the maiden Italian Consulate General Under 20 Cup in Lagos possess the ability to break into top European football, including Italy’s prestigious Serie A, if properly developed and given the right opportunities.

Martins made this assertion after closely observing the tournament, which brought together some of the most promising youth players from academies and feeder teams across Nigeria. The event, held in Lagos, served as both a competitive football platform and a scouting initiative aimed at strengthening football ties between Nigeria and Italy while creating pathways for young Nigerian players to pursue professional careers abroad.

The tournament featured eight teams drawn from different parts of the country, including well known grassroots sides and academy structures such as Okaka FC, 36 Lions FC, Plateau United feeder team and Bendel Insurance youth team. Over the course of several days, the competition showcased intense matches, emerging talents, and a growing level of tactical awareness among the participating players.

Held at the Mobolaji Johnson Stadium in Onikan, the competition attracted the attention of scouts, football administrators, and former professionals who were eager to assess the quality of Nigeria’s youth football system. The atmosphere throughout the tournament reflected both excitement and ambition, as players competed not only for the trophy but also for the possibility of securing opportunities in Europe.

Martins, who served as one of the official ambassadors of the tournament alongside former Super Eagles midfielder Christian Obodo, described the quality of play as impressive and encouraging. According to him, the technical ability, speed, creativity, and determination displayed by several players suggest that Nigeria continues to produce raw football talent capable of succeeding at the highest level if properly nurtured.

He noted that while many of the players are still developing, their potential is evident and their performances during the tournament demonstrated that they can compete beyond the local level. Martins emphasized that exposure to structured football environments in Europe would play a crucial role in shaping their careers and improving their tactical understanding of the game.

Martins stated that he was particularly impressed by the confidence shown by the young players, adding that several of them stood out in different matches throughout the competition. He explained that tournaments like this provide an important bridge between grassroots football in Nigeria and professional football opportunities abroad, especially in countries like Italy where Nigerian players have historically found success.

The former Inter Milan and Newcastle United forward expressed optimism that with the right guidance, some of the players could eventually earn trials and contracts in Serie A clubs. He stressed that talent alone is not enough, highlighting the importance of discipline, consistent training, and mental strength in achieving success at professional level.

The tournament organiser, Emmanuel Omijeh, also confirmed that the scouting process during the competition was highly competitive due to the abundance of talent on display. He revealed that a large number of players were identified by scouts, making the selection process more challenging than initially expected.

According to Omijeh, around 40 players were initially shortlisted based on their performances, but this number will be reduced before a final group is selected for further exposure in Italy. He explained that the goal is to ensure that only the most prepared and promising talents are taken abroad for advanced training and development opportunities.

The Italian Consul General in Lagos, Ugo Bani, praised the success of the tournament and described it as an important step in strengthening cultural and sporting ties between Nigeria and Italy. He emphasized that football remains a powerful tool for international collaboration and youth development, noting that the initiative is designed to open doors for talented Nigerian players.

Former Super Eagles midfielder Christian Obodo, who also participated in scouting activities during the tournament, shared similar views. Having previously played in Italy for clubs such as Perugia, Fiorentina, and Udinese, Obodo highlighted that the standard of play among the young players exceeded expectations.

He explained that the final stages of the competition revealed some outstanding talents who demonstrated tactical intelligence, physical strength, and strong technical ability. Obodo added that he has already begun sharing information about some of the standout players with contacts in Italy, in hopes of securing opportunities for them to undergo trials.

Other football stakeholders at the event also commended the level of organisation and the quality of performances throughout the tournament. Technical director Ken Enofe noted that while the players are still at an early stage in their development, their potential is undeniable and with proper investment, they could develop into professional footballers capable of competing internationally.

He further stressed the importance of continued youth development programs in Nigeria, stating that consistent exposure to structured competitions is essential for refining raw talent. According to him, tournaments like the Italian Consulate Cup play a critical role in identifying and nurturing future stars.

Tournament chairman Kofo Williams also highlighted the importance of long term planning for youth development, emphasizing that talent identification must be followed by structured training and mentorship. He noted that without proper guidance, many promising players risk not reaching their full potential.

Martins, who remains one of Nigeria’s most successful football exports with a career spanning clubs in Italy, England, Germany, Spain, Russia, and the United States, continues to advocate for youth development in Nigerian football. His involvement in the tournament reflects his commitment to giving back to the system that produced him.

The Italian Consulate initiative is expected to become an annual event, with plans already underway to expand its scope and increase the number of participating teams in future editions. Organisers believe this will create even more opportunities for young players to be discovered and mentored.

As the tournament concludes, attention now turns to the next phase, which involves selecting players for potential trials in Italy. For many of the participants, the experience represents a significant step forward in their football journey and a possible gateway to professional careers abroad.

In conclusion, Obafemi Martins’ endorsement of the young talents discovered at the Italian Consulate Under 20 Cup highlights the growing connection between Nigerian grassroots football and European opportunities. His remarks reinforce the belief that Nigeria continues to produce exceptional football talent capable of succeeding on the global stage if properly supported.
