NYSC Director-General Urges Corps Members To Remain Apolitical Nationwide

ABUJA, NIGERIA — The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Olakunle Nafiu, has advised corps members across the country to maintain an apolitical stance and avoid involvement in partisan political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The warning was issued as political activities gradually intensify nationwide, with parties and political actors already positioning for future contests.

Brigadier-General Nafiu reminded corps members that the NYSC scheme was established to promote national unity, discipline, and development rather than political partisanship.

He stressed that corps members must uphold neutrality throughout their service year and avoid actions capable of compromising the integrity of the scheme.

According to him, participating openly in partisan politics while serving could expose corps members to unnecessary risks and undermine public confidence in the programme.

The NYSC boss also encouraged participants to focus on community development, personal growth, and nation-building initiatives during their service.

He emphasised the importance of discipline, professionalism, and respect for the rules guiding the scheme.

The warning comes amid growing political mobilisation across different regions of Nigeria as preparations gradually build toward the next election cycle.

Political analysts note that young people, including corps members, are often targeted by political actors because of their numbers and influence.

However, experts argue that maintaining neutrality is essential for preserving the credibility and non-partisan image of the NYSC.

The Director-General further advised corps members to avoid spreading politically sensitive content capable of causing division or unrest.

He urged them to use social media responsibly and remain law-abiding citizens throughout their service year.

The NYSC has historically played a major role during elections, particularly through the deployment of corps members as ad hoc staff by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Because of this role, observers say neutrality among corps members remains critical to maintaining public trust in the electoral process.

Brigadier-General Nafiu reassured corps members that the scheme remains committed to their welfare, safety, and professional development.

He also encouraged them to contribute positively to their host communities and serve as ambassadors of unity and peace.

The appeal reflects broader concerns about political tension and the need to safeguard young Nigerians from becoming tools in partisan conflicts.

As political activities continue to increase nationwide, the NYSC leadership says it will continue monitoring compliance with its regulations and code of conduct.
