ABUJA, NIGERIA — Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Olasunkanmi Tegbe, has declared that he should be held responsible if repeated national grid collapses continue under his leadership, as he pledged to reform the country’s troubled electricity sector.
The minister made the commitment while addressing growing public frustration over recurring power outages and instability in Nigeria’s electricity supply system.
He stated that restoring confidence in the national grid and improving electricity distribution remain top priorities for the administration.
According to Tegbe, the power sector requires urgent structural reforms, stronger investment, and improved coordination among stakeholders to address long-standing challenges.
He acknowledged that repeated grid collapses have negatively affected businesses, households, and economic productivity across the country.
The minister stressed that Nigerians deserve a more stable and reliable electricity supply, adding that accountability must become central to the management of the sector.
He assured citizens that efforts are underway to modernise transmission infrastructure and strengthen operational efficiency within the national grid.
Tegbe also emphasised the need for collaboration between government agencies, private operators, and electricity distribution companies to achieve sustainable improvements.
Nigeria’s power sector has faced persistent difficulties for years, including inadequate infrastructure, low generation capacity, vandalism, and financial challenges.
Frequent national grid collapses have become a recurring concern, often plunging large parts of the country into darkness and disrupting economic activities.
Industry experts argue that solving the crisis will require long-term planning, substantial investment, and consistent policy implementation.
Analysts also note that public confidence in the sector has weakened due to repeated promises of reform without significant improvements in electricity supply.
The minister’s remarks have drawn attention because of the direct accountability pledge, which many Nigerians see as a bold statement amid longstanding power challenges.
Supporters believe the declaration signals a willingness to confront systemic issues, while critics insist that measurable results will be the true test of leadership.
The Federal Government has repeatedly identified power sector reform as critical to economic growth, industrial development, and improved living standards.
Tegbe reiterated that addressing grid instability is essential for attracting investment and supporting national development goals.
He also promised greater transparency in the management of the sector and stronger monitoring mechanisms to reduce operational failures.
As reform efforts continue, Nigerians are expected to closely watch whether the new leadership can deliver meaningful improvements in electricity supply and grid stability nationwide.
