Obasa, who spent N17bn to ‘install’ gate, reinstated as Lagos Assembly Speaker

Mudashiru Obasa has been reinstated as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, marking a dramatic turn of events following his impeachment in January.
His return to the position comes after the resignation of Mojisola Meranda, who stepped down as Speaker with immediate effect during Monday’s plenary session.
Obasa’s reinstatement has reignited debates over allegations of corruption and mismanagement that led to his initial removal.
Among the most controversial accusations was the alleged spending of N17 billion to install a gate.
In January, over 90% of the lawmakers voted to impeach Obasa, citing poor leadership, high-handedness, frequent lateness to plenary sessions, abuse of office, and intimidation of colleagues.
However, Obasa rejected the impeachment, arguing that due constitutional procedures were not followed.
“My status in the House? I believe strongly I am still the speaker until the right thing has been done. If you want to remove me, remove me the proper way, and I will not contest it,” Obasa had stated during the controversy.
The leadership crisis was resolved after interventions by prominent All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders, including former governors Bisi Akande (Osun), Segun Osoba (Ogun), and Akinwunmi Ambode (Lagos), under the directive of President Bola Tinubu.
A reconciliation meeting with lawmakers paved the way for Meranda’s resignation and Obasa’s subsequent reinstatement.
During the plenary session, Meranda announced, “This is a notice of resignation as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly,” clearing the path for Obasa’s return.
In his address, Obasa thanked the lawmakers and called for unity and love among members.
The reinstatement has sparked mixed reactions, with critics questioning the accountability and transparency of the process, especially given the unresolved allegations of financial misappropriation.
Supporters, however, argue that Obasa’s return stabilizes the House and ensures continuity in governance.
As the Lagos State House of Assembly moves forward, all eyes will be on Obasa’s leadership and whether he can address the concerns that led to his impeachment while fostering unity among lawmakers.
