Over 2,000 people dead in aftermath of Myanmar earthquake
as hospitals get overwhelmed by victims

Over 2,000 persons have been reported dead, following powerful earthquakes that hit the city of Myanmar on Friday, March 27, 2025.
The earthquakes measured 7.7 and 6.4 magnitude.
Myanmar’s military leadership has declared a week of national mourning.
The United Nations on its part, made an urgent appeal for $8million.
This comes as aid groups warn of a worsening humanitarian crisis in the war-torn country.
Hospitals damaged and overwhelmed with influx and treatment of the injured and deceased.
According to the BBC, the smell of dead bodies is spreading through the streets.
School bags and other learning materials were seen lying scattered among the rubble in the surroundings of what was a preschool in Kyauske.
Online media reports have it that the country’s military leaders are still carrying out air strikes against armed resistance.
The battle against this resistance group has reportedly been on since 2021.
The earthquake also affected neighbouring Thailand, where 20 people are reportedly killed from the impact of the earthquake.
Media sources reveal that rescue efforts for 74 construction workers trapped under the rubble of a collapsed high-rise building in the capital is still on.
According to the city’s deputy governor, there have not been any reports of any casualty.
Hospitals are struggling to cope with the thousands of injured people in need of medical care.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has reported that hospitals in the affected areas are facing huge demands for trauma and surgical care, blood transfusion supplies, anesthetics, and essential medicines.
To address this, the WHO has dispatched nearly 3 tons of medical supplies, including trauma kits and multipurpose tents, to hospitals in Nay Pyi Taw and Mandalay.
The situation is particularly concerning given that Myanmar’s healthcare system was already fragile due to ongoing conflict in the region.
Prior to the earthquakes, an estimated 12.9 million people were in need of humanitarian health interventions in Myanmar in 2025.
Myanmar’s military junta has said it would hold a minute silence in honour of the victims of the earthquakes on Tuesday, April 1, 2025.
The junta announced that it will take place at 12:51:02, the exact time the 7.7 magnitude earthquake happened.
Calls for a ceasefire are growing louder, to facilitate aid relief to victims of the devastating Myanmar earthquakes.
Apart from leaving people injured, the 7.7 magnitude an 6.4 magnitude earthquakes have also left thousands of people displaced or missing.
It has also left entire buildings collapsing in Bangkok and Mandalay.
The UK government has announced a package of up to 10 million pounds in support to help the people of Myanmar.
The donation focused on food, water, medicine and shelter.
Organizations like Christian Aid and GlobalGiving are also mobilizing emergency response efforts, providing vital life-saving assistance, search and rescue operations, and temporary shelter.
However, the ongoing conflict in Myanmar poses significant challenges to relief efforts.
A ceasefire would be crucial in allowing aid to reach affected areas safely and efficiently.
The international community is urged to support calls for a ceasefire, ensuring that humanitarian assistance can be delivered to those in desperate need.
