Paul Pogba’s future at Monaco has become uncertain after the French club admitted that the World Cup winner could leave during the summer transfer window following a disappointing debut season affected by fitness problems.

The experienced midfielder joined Monaco with hopes of reviving his career after a difficult period away from regular football, but injuries limited his impact and prevented him from becoming the influential figure the club expected.

Monaco’s general manager Thiago Scuro has now confirmed that the club will carefully assess Pogba’s situation before deciding whether he remains part of their plans for the upcoming campaign.

Speaking about the midfielder’s future, Scuro admitted that a departure remains a possibility while praising Pogba’s professionalism and influence within the dressing room.

“Yes, of course. Maybe he will leave, maybe he will stay. It’s a very complicated subject,” Scuro said.

The Monaco official explained that the club respected Pogba as both a player and a person, highlighting the positive influence he had on younger teammates after arriving at Stade Louis II.

However, he also acknowledged that the project surrounding Pogba did not develop as expected during his first season in Ligue 1.

“When we started it, the expectations we had were very different,” Scuro added, reflecting on the challenges surrounding the midfielder’s return to competitive football.

Pogba’s struggles have largely been connected to his physical condition. The 33 year old managed only six appearances for Monaco last season, playing just 115 minutes of football due to several injury setbacks.

A combination of thigh, calf and ankle problems prevented him from building rhythm, leaving Monaco unable to benefit from the creativity, passing range and leadership qualities that made him one of the world’s elite midfielders during his prime years.

The arrival of new Monaco head coach Filipe Luís has created another important stage in determining Pogba’s future. The former Atletico Madrid and Chelsea defender is expected to evaluate the entire squad during pre season before making decisions about which players fit into his tactical plans.

Pogba’s preparation during the summer will be closely monitored, with the coaching staff focusing on whether he can regain the physical level required to compete consistently at the highest level.

Monaco believe the midfielder deserves a fair opportunity to prove himself, but performances and fitness will ultimately decide whether he continues with the club.

Scuro explained that Pogba’s future would depend on his progress during training sessions and the assessment of the new coaching team.

The midfielder’s career has experienced significant highs and lows in recent years. Born in Lagny sur Marne, France, to Guinean parents, Pogba developed his football skills at a young age before joining the youth system of Manchester United.

After leaving England for Juventus FC as a teenager, he quickly became one of Europe’s most exciting midfield talents. His performances in Italy earned him a reputation as a complete midfielder capable of controlling games through his passing, strength, technique and creativity.

Pogba returned to Manchester United in 2016 for a then world record transfer fee of around £89 million. During his second spell at Old Trafford, he won the Europa League and League Cup while becoming a key player for both club and country.

His greatest international achievement came with France at the 2018 FIFA World Cup, where he played a central role in helping Les Bleus lift the trophy in Russia. His goal in the final against Croatia became one of the defining moments of his career.

However, injuries and off field difficulties affected the later stages of his Manchester United career before he returned to Juventus. His time in Italy was also disrupted by fitness problems, and he eventually left the club before joining Monaco.

Pogba’s Monaco move in 2025 represented an attempt to rebuild his career and prove he could still perform at the highest level. His first competitive appearance for the club came after a lengthy absence from football, making his return a significant personal achievement.

Despite the challenges, Monaco’s decision regarding Pogba is also influenced by financial considerations. The club is under pressure to manage its wage structure, with several high earning players being considered for possible departures.

Pogba’s salary places him among Monaco’s biggest earners, meaning the club could consider selling him if he is not guaranteed a regular role under Filipe Luís.

The French side are also reportedly evaluating other senior players as they look to reduce expenses and refresh the squad ahead of the new season.

For Pogba, the coming weeks could determine the next chapter of a career filled with remarkable achievements but also significant setbacks.

Whether he remains in Monaco or searches for another opportunity, the midfielder’s priority will be proving that he can return to full fitness and once again influence matches at the highest level.
