BENIN CITY, EDO STATE — The Edo State Police Command has arrested a woman identified as “Aza Woman” for allegedly spreading false information regarding the kidnapping of students at Green Park Academy in Benin City, a claim that triggered widespread panic among residents.

The police confirmed the arrest on Sunday, stating that the suspect was taken into custody following investigations that revealed the viral claims circulating on social media were fabricated and had no factual basis.

According to preliminary findings, the suspect allegedly disseminated information suggesting that students of the school had been abducted, prompting alarm within the community and leading to unnecessary tension before authorities intervened to clarify the situation.

The command explained that security operatives swiftly responded to the reports by deploying personnel to the area to verify the claims. After a thorough assessment, the police confirmed that no kidnapping incident had occurred at the school, and normal academic activities were ongoing without disruption.

Authorities described the false report as dangerous misinformation capable of causing fear, confusion, and possible breakdown of public order. The police stressed that such actions undermine public safety efforts and divert security resources that could be used to address genuine threats.

The Edo State Police Command further warned residents against the spread of unverified information, especially on social media platforms, noting that individuals found culpable of circulating false reports will face prosecution under relevant laws.

Police spokespersons reiterated that misinformation regarding security incidents can have serious consequences, including panic-induced reactions among residents and unnecessary strain on security agencies tasked with maintaining order.

The command also urged members of the public to always verify sensitive information through official channels before sharing it, emphasizing the importance of responsible communication in maintaining peace and stability within communities.

Community leaders in the area have also expressed concern over the growing trend of false security alerts, noting that such incidents can erode trust and create unnecessary fear among parents and residents.

They called for increased public awareness campaigns to educate citizens on the dangers of spreading unverified information, particularly in matters relating to security and public safety.

The police confirmed that investigations are ongoing, and the suspect will be charged in court upon completion of preliminary procedures.

Authorities reassured residents that Edo State remains safe and that security agencies are committed to responding promptly to any genuine threats while discouraging actions that could disrupt public peace.

The arrest serves as a warning, the command said, that the dissemination of false information will not be tolerated and will be met with the full weight of the law.
