BENIN CITY, EDO STATE — The Edo State Command of the Nigeria Police Force has dismissed reports alleging the kidnapping of students at Green Park Academy in Benin City, describing the claims as false and misleading.
In a statement, the police said preliminary checks and security assessments conducted in response to the viral reports showed that no such abduction took place at the school. The command added that the information being circulated on social media was unverified and capable of causing unnecessary panic among residents.
Authorities warned individuals and groups responsible for spreading false security alerts that they risk prosecution under relevant cybercrime and public order laws. The police stressed that misinformation about kidnapping or violent incidents can trigger fear, disrupt normal activities, and divert security attention from genuine threats.
The command urged members of the public to always verify sensitive information through official police channels before sharing it online. It also advised residents of Edo State to remain calm and avoid contributing to the spread of rumours that could destabilize communities.
According to the police, maintaining public order requires responsible communication, especially in cases involving alleged attacks on schools or vulnerable groups. They noted that fake reports of kidnappings have increasingly become a challenge, often circulating widely on social media before being properly verified.
The Nigeria Police Force reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property across Edo State, particularly in schools and other public institutions. It assured residents that security operatives remain vigilant and ready to respond promptly to any credible threat.
Education stakeholders and community leaders have also called for calm, urging parents not to panic over unconfirmed reports. They emphasized the importance of cooperation between schools, communities, and security agencies in ensuring the safety of students.
Security experts note that the rapid spread of misinformation about security incidents poses a growing challenge in Nigeria, often leading to public anxiety and unnecessary tension. They stress the need for digital responsibility and timely clarification from authorities to prevent confusion.
As of the time of this report, the police maintain that there is no evidence to support claims of a student abduction at Green Park Academy in Benin City. The command reaffirmed that any genuine security incident will be communicated through verified official channels.
