MAIDUGURI, Nigeria — The Borno State Police Command has intercepted 55 sacks of illicit substances suspected to be ‘Gumm’ enroute international borders, arresting one suspect in connection with the seizure, authorities have confirmed.

The command’s spokesperson confirmed the development in a statement issued on Saturday, revealing that the drugs were intercepted along a route leading to the state’s international borders. The operation, which was carried out by operatives of the command, prevented the shipment from being smuggled out of the country.

According to the police, the suspect arrested in connection with the seizure is currently in custody and is assisting with investigations. The command stated that efforts are ongoing to track down other members of the syndicate believed to be behind the illegal drug trade.

The recovery of the 55 sacks of illicit substances underscores the ongoing efforts by security agencies to curb drug trafficking and other cross-border crimes in Borno State. The state shares borders with Chad, Niger, and Cameroon, making it a strategic corridor for smuggling activities.

The police command has reaffirmed its commitment to combating drug trafficking and other criminal activities in the state. The command urged members of the public to report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station to assist in the fight against crime.

The suspect will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations, the police said.

The interception of the illicit consignment comes amid growing concerns over the use of Borno’s porous borders for the smuggling of drugs and other contraband. Security analysts have noted that the state’s proximity to the Lake Chad region and its extensive borderlines make it a prime transit route for criminal networks involved in drug trafficking, arms smuggling, and human trafficking.

‘Gumm’, the substance seized by the police, is one of several illicit drugs that have gained notoriety in the region. While its exact composition remains under investigation, authorities have linked similar substances to rising cases of substance abuse among young people in Borno and neighbouring states.

The Borno State Police Command has intensified its operations along border communities and major highways in response to the growing threat of drug trafficking. The command has also strengthened collaboration with other security agencies, including the Nigeria Customs Service and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), to enhance intelligence sharing and joint operations.

Residents of border communities have been urged to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activities to security agencies. The police have also appealed to traditional rulers and community leaders to support the fight against drug trafficking by discouraging young people from engaging in criminal activities.

The arrest of the suspect and the seizure of the drugs are seen as a significant victory in the state’s ongoing battle against illicit substances. However, security experts have cautioned that more needs to be done to address the underlying factors driving drug trafficking, including poverty, unemployment, and the lack of economic opportunities in border communities.

As the investigation continues, the police have assured the public that all those found culpable will face the full weight of the law. The command has also reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the lives and property of residents and ensuring that Borno State does not become a safe haven for drug traffickers and other criminals.
