Portuguese giants FC Porto have reportedly decided against signing Nigerian striker Terem Moffi on a permanent deal after the conclusion of his loan spell from French side OGC Nice.
The decision ends weeks of speculation surrounding the future of the Super Eagles forward, whose temporary move to Portugal failed to produce the impact many supporters expected when he arrived at the Estádio do Dragão earlier this year.
Porto had the option of completing a permanent transfer for Moffi through an €8 million buy clause included in the loan agreement signed with Nice in January. However, reports from Portugal indicate that the club’s management and technical staff eventually decided not to proceed with the deal following the striker’s inconsistent performances during the second half of the season.
The development now leaves Moffi facing another uncertain summer as he prepares to return to Nice while interest from clubs across Europe continues growing.
Moffi’s move to Porto initially appeared to be the perfect opportunity for the Nigerian international to revive his career after a turbulent spell in France.
The 26-year-old striker joined Porto seeking regular playing time and a fresh start following increasing tensions at Nice during the 2025 season. At the time of the transfer, Porto supporters believed the powerful forward possessed the quality and experience needed to strengthen the club’s attacking department.
Known for his pace, physical strength and clinical finishing, Moffi arrived in Portugal carrying the reputation of one of Nigeria’s most talented forwards in European football.
However, things did not develop as expected.
Despite showing flashes of quality in several matches, Moffi struggled to establish consistency in front of goal. Injuries, tactical adjustments and competition for starting places affected his momentum throughout the campaign.
The Nigerian striker finished his Porto spell with only two goals and one assist in 15 appearances across all competitions, statistics considered below expectations for a player signed to improve the club’s attacking output.
Reports from Portuguese media suggest Porto initially attempted to negotiate a reduced transfer fee with Nice after deciding the original €8 million valuation was too high. However, discussions between both clubs reportedly failed to produce an agreement, leading Porto to walk away from the permanent deal.
The decision marks another difficult chapter in Moffi’s recent career journey after enjoying major success in French football just a few years ago.
Moffi first rose to prominence following his move to FC Lorient in 2020. The Nigerian forward quickly became one of Ligue 1’s most exciting attackers after delivering impressive performances during his debut campaign in France.
His combination of speed, movement and finishing ability immediately attracted attention from football fans and scouts across Europe.
During the 2020/21 season, Moffi scored 14 league goals for Lorient and played a key role in helping the club avoid relegation. He continued improving over the following seasons and established himself as one of the most dangerous African forwards in the French top flight.
The striker reached another level during the first half of the 2022/23 season when he emerged among Ligue 1’s leading scorers alongside global stars such as Kylian Mbappé and Neymar.
His outstanding form convinced Nice to secure his signature in a deal reportedly worth around €30 million in January 2023, making him one of the club’s most expensive signings.
Moffi initially impressed at Nice and quickly became an important attacking figure for the French side. He scored several crucial goals and ended the 2023/24 season as one of the club’s leading scorers.
However, injuries and inconsistency gradually affected his progress. Off-field tensions also reportedly contributed to his struggles at Nice.
Reports in France claimed that Moffi and teammate Jérémie Boga were confronted by angry supporters following a poor run of results late in 2025. The incident created further pressure around the squad and intensified speculation surrounding Moffi’s future at the club.
His January loan move to Porto was therefore viewed as an opportunity to restart his career in a less stressful environment.
Despite the disappointing outcome in Portugal, Moffi continues attracting interest from several clubs across Europe.
English Premier League sides West Ham United F.C. and Aston Villa F.C. have both been linked with the striker in previous transfer windows, while Italian side S.S. Lazio and Turkish giants Fenerbahçe S.K. are also reportedly monitoring his situation ahead of the summer market.
Football analysts believe the Nigerian international still possesses the talent needed to succeed at a high level if he can regain confidence and secure consistent playing opportunities.
At international level, Moffi remains part of the Super Eagles setup and continues competing for a regular role in Nigeria’s attacking line alongside established stars such as Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman.
With the transfer window approaching, attention will now focus on where the Nigerian striker could continue his career next season.
For Porto, the decision signals a desire to explore alternative attacking options ahead of the new campaign. For Moffi, meanwhile, the coming months could become one of the most important periods of his professional career as he seeks to rediscover the form that once made him one of Europe’s most exciting African strikers.
