Queen Margrethe II Abdicates, Son Frederik Becomes King in Denmark’s Rare Royal Transition
Queen Margrethe II, 83, is set to abdicate her throne of Denmark after a 52-year reign, making way for her 55-year-old son, Frederik, to become the new king. The abdication, only the second in Danish history, will take place at Christiansborg Palace, following a short carriage ride from Amalienborg Palace.
The Council of State at 2:00 pm will mark the signing of the abdication declaration, leading to Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen proclaiming Frederik as King Frederik X on the balcony of Christiansborg Palace. No foreign dignitaries are invited to the event, which is expected to draw a large crowd in Copenhagen.
The surprise abdication, announced in Queen Margrethe’s New Year’s Eve address, has drawn support from over 80% of Danes. Frederik, who has gradually taken on more responsibilities, is seen as a modern and informal monarch, set to bring his own style to the ceremonial role.
The abdication has symbolic significance, occurring exactly 52 years from the day Queen Margrethe took over from her father. Despite retaining her title of queen, the move is seen as a way to pass the throne to Frederik, allowing him time to flourish in his role as monarch.
The transition is unique in Danish history and underscores the royal family’s acknowledgment of changing times and generational shifts. Frederik, known for his environmental advocacy and sportsmanship, is expected to define his reign in his own way, distinct from his mother’s legacy as a writer and artist.
