Relegation looms as ex-champs Leicester set miserable premier league record

Former Premier League champions Leicester City’s miserable Premier League season hit a new low on Monday night.
The side slumped to a 3-0 defeat against Carabao Cup champions Newcastle United—a result that saw them set an embarrassing Football League record and edge closer to relegation.
Newcastle took control early at the King Power Stadium, with Jacob Murphy opening the scoring by tapping in at the far post.
The winger doubled his tally shortly after when Fabian Schar’s audacious long-range effort struck the crossbar, allowing Murphy to pounce on the rebound.
Former Leicester star Harvey Barnes then rubbed salt in the wounds with a third goal, sealing a dominant victory for the Champions League-chasing Magpies.
The defeat leaves Leicester 19th in the table, 15 points adrift of safety with just seven games remaining.
More damningly, it marked their eighth consecutive home league loss without scoring a single goal—a new record in the entire history of the Football League.
Leicester’s goal drought at home now stretches over 12 hours, with their last strike at the King Power coming in January during a 2-1 win over Tottenham.
They have also become only the second team in top-flight history to go eight straight home games without scoring, matching Manchester City’s unwanted feat from 2007.
Adding to their misery, this season has seen Leicester lose 11 home league matches—the most in a single campaign in the club’s history.
With Southampton already confirmed as relegated, Leicester’s fate could be sealed in the coming days.
They will officially drop into the Championship if Wolves win their next two games or if Leicester lose their next two matches.
Manager Ruud van Nistelrooy, who took over earlier this season, admitted the situation was “difficult” but refused to guarantee his future at the club.
“You come here to do well and work with great people, but when you can’t get results, it’s very disappointing,” he told the press.
“The club is the most important thing, and what’s best for the club is what we have to consider now.” When pressed further, he added: “No, there’s no questions—it’s just dealing with another setback.”
Meanwhile, Newcastle’s victory keeps them firmly in the hunt for a top-four finish.
Eddie Howe’s side sit fifth, just two points behind fourth-placed Aston Villa with a game in hand.
Leicester face an uphill battle to salvage any pride from their dismal season, with their next match against Everton potentially confirming their relegation.
For Newcastle, the focus remains on securing a return to Europe’s elite competition.
