Medical experts across Nigeria are reporting an increase in patients experiencing ongoing fatigue, warning that the condition often goes beyond ordinary tiredness and may signal deeper health or lifestyle issues.
Healthcare providers say more individuals are presenting with symptoms such as low energy, reduced concentration, and a constant feeling of physical and mental exhaustion. While many people attribute these symptoms to stress or demanding routines, specialists caution that persistent fatigue can be an indicator of underlying medical conditions.
Common Medical Causes
One of the most frequently identified conditions linked to fatigue is Iron Deficiency Anaemia, particularly among women. The condition limits the blood’s ability to carry oxygen, leading to weakness and prolonged tiredness.
Another factor is Vitamin D Deficiency. Despite Nigeria’s sunny climate, experts note that increased indoor lifestyles may reduce exposure to sunlight, which is essential for vitamin D production.
Doctors also highlight Hypothyroidism as a commonly overlooked cause. This condition can slow metabolism, resulting in fatigue, weight gain, and difficulty focusing.
Additionally, the growing prevalence of Type 2 Diabetes and pre-diabetes is contributing to low energy levels, particularly among adults.
Impact of Daily Living Conditions
Beyond medical causes, experts say environmental and lifestyle factors in Nigeria significantly contribute to fatigue. Challenges such as inconsistent power supply, reliance on generators, heavy traffic, and noise pollution create what professionals describe as ongoing background stress.
Sleep disruption is a major concern. High temperatures, noise, and anxiety often interfere with rest, preventing the body from recovering properly and leading to chronic tiredness.
Mental Health and Burnout
Specialists also point to the role of mental health. Conditions such as Depression and Anxiety are closely linked to fatigue but are frequently underdiagnosed due to social stigma.
In many cases, individuals report physical exhaustion without recognising underlying emotional distress. Burnout, particularly among professionals in high-pressure environments, is also on the rise. Unlike normal tiredness, burnout includes emotional exhaustion, reduced productivity, and a sense of detachment.
Call for Greater Awareness
Health experts emphasize the need for increased awareness and early medical evaluation. Persistent fatigue should not be ignored, as proper diagnosis can help identify treatable conditions and improve quality of life.
They advise individuals experiencing prolonged tiredness to seek medical attention, adopt healthier sleep habits, and address both physical and mental health needs as part of a comprehensive approach to well-being.
