Risk of penalties for vehicle owners over third party insurance from February
DDM News

Starting on Saturday, February 1, 2025, vehicle owners in Nigeria risk penalties for failing to comply with the mandatory Vehicle Third Party Insurance requirement.
Diaspora digital media (DDM) gathered that this action follows a directive from the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, and aims to strengthen road safety across the country.
The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has reiterated its commitment to enforcing this law, emphasizing that any non-compliance will result in penalties.
According to a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the NPF has warned vehicle owners and operators to avoid the risk of facing legal consequences by ensuring they have valid Third Party Insurance.
“Failure to present proof of Third Party Insurance will result in strict enforcement, including fines and penalties, in line with relevant extant laws,” the statement said.
The Police have made it clear that starting February 1st, all vehicle owners must have valid Third Party Insurance to avoid the risk of being fined or penalized.
The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has instructed all State Commissioners of Police to monitor and enforce the law diligently.
Police officers will be authorized to conduct random checks on vehicles and impose penalties on those who are non-compliant.
Failure to show proof of valid insurance will risk fines, legal action, and other penalties, underscoring the importance of abiding by the law.
In light of the February 1 deadline, the NPF urges vehicle owners to act quickly and secure Third Party Insurance to avoid unnecessary embarrassment or risk facing penalties.
The police are determined to protect public safety, and the enforcement of this law is a crucial part of the effort.
Non-compliance with the law could jeopardize not only the vehicle owner’s safety but also the safety of others on the road, making insurance a vital responsibility.
The police statement further emphasized that vehicle owners who risk driving without the required insurance should take immediate action to avoid the consequences.
The risk of penalties is high, and individuals are strongly advised to obtain the necessary insurance before the enforcement begins.
The Nigeria Police Force has expressed appreciation for the cooperation of the public, stressing that compliance with road safety regulations, including the possession of Third Party Insurance, is essential for safeguarding lives and promoting a safer environment for everyone.
Vehicle owners who fail to comply risk penalties that could significantly affect their driving privileges and financial standing.
Therefore, it is crucial for all vehicle owners to ensure that their insurance is valid to avoid facing the consequences.
