VANCOUVER, Canada — Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni has confirmed that captain Lionel Messi will begin the 2026 World Cup Group J match against Jordan from the bench, a tactical decision aimed at managing the 39-year-old’s workload as the defending champions prepare for the knockout stage.

The match, scheduled to be played in Vancouver, sees Argentina already assured of a place in the Round of 32 after securing two consecutive victories to open their title defence. Scaloni is expected to rotate his squad heavily, with the group stage finale carrying little consequence for the South American side beyond maintaining momentum.

“Lionel Messi will not start in the match against Jordan. This tactical decision was officially confirmed by coach Lionel Scaloni ahead of the clash with the Jordan national team,” sources from Argentina’s camp confirmed. The reigning world champions have already secured their spot in the knockout stage after two consecutive victories. Therefore, the coaching staff has decided to rest key players.

Scaloni wants to reduce the pressure on his captain, who recently turned 39. Although not a starter, the Inter Miami star could still come on as a substitute. The head coach has affirmed that he will play at an appropriate time.

The upcoming lineup will see many new faces trying out, with young midfielder Nicolás Paz likely to be given an opportunity to replace his senior teammate and lead the attack.

Messi has been in scintillating form at the tournament, scoring all five of Argentina’s goals in their opening two matches, including a hat-trick and a brace. He currently leads the race for the Golden Boot with five goals, ahead of Norway’s Erling Haaland (4) and France’s Kylian Mbappé (4).

The decision to rest the tournament’s leading scorer reflects Argentina’s long-term strategy. Should they progress as expected, Messi will be fresh and available for a daunting Round of 32 fixture against Cape Verde, with the match tentatively scheduled to take place in the United States. The veteran forward holds the record for the most goals in World Cup history with 18 across all editions, and Scaloni’s management of his minutes could prove crucial in the knockout rounds.
