The Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Oyo State has strongly refuted claims made by the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that several members of the SDP, particularly from the Oluyole local government area, recently defected to the PDP.

Diaspora digital media (DDM) reports available indicates the SDP has clarified that none of its members have left the party in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections, urging the PDP to stop spreading false information.

The confusion arose after the PDP alleged that a significant number of SDP members in Oluyole had joined their ranks, led by a man named Mr. Olusina Ogunsola.

The PDP’s statement was made public over the weekend, with claims that these defections were a major political shift in the local government area.

However, the SDP swiftly responded, rejecting these claims and pointing out that Mr. Ogunsola is not a member of the SDP, nor is he associated with any defectors in the region.

In a statement issued by Hon. Ganiyu Lawal, the SDP Chairman in Oluyole, and Hon. Saheed Adewale Adetunji, the Secretary, the party made it clear that the SDP’s structure in Oluyole remains intact.

They emphasized that none of the local government’s SDP members had joined the PDP, contrary to the claims made by the PDP.

They also clarified that any individuals mentioned in the news report had already left the SDP before the 2023 general election and are no longer affiliated with the party.

The statement went on to say, “Oluyole SDP is intact. It has come to our notice that one Mr. Ogunsola led some of our members in SDP Oluyole local government to PDP Oluyole.

We want the general public to know that SDP Oluyole is intact, and none of our members left the party. Those names that were mentioned in the news are not our members.

They had already left the party before the 2023 general election.”

The SDP leadership also referred to the support expressed by the SDP’s gubernatorial candidate for the PDP’s Governor Oluseyi Makinde during the last election, which led to the defection of the gubernatorial candidate to the PDP.

The SDP leadership took this opportunity to address the issue of political opportunism, criticizing Mr. Ogunsola for making false claims.

They suggested that his actions might indicate a lack of understanding of Oluyole’s local politics and warned him to be cautious about his political movements.

The SDP leaders also referred to Ogunsola as a “political trader” and a “political parasite,” urging him to seek advice before making such claims.

Further clarifying the situation, the SDP emphasized that there had been no defections from their ranks in Oluyole to the PDP.

They firmly requested that the PDP cease spreading false information that could mislead the public about the party’s standing in the region.

The SDP’s statement reassured its supporters that the party’s presence and influence in Oluyole and the broader Oyo State remain solid and undisturbed by the fabricated reports.

The ongoing political rivalry between the SDP and PDP in Oyo State has been marked by heated exchanges, especially with the upcoming 2027 general elections drawing nearer.

The SDP is positioning itself as a key opposition force, and the party’s leadership is keen on ensuring that such baseless rumors and misinformation do not undermine their efforts or discredit their members.

In conclusion, the SDP has taken a firm stance against the PDP’s allegations, asserting that no members have defected to the ruling party and calling on the PDP to stop spreading fake news.

The party’s leadership has made it clear that any claims of defections are false, and they will continue to work on strengthening their position in Oyo State as the 2027 elections approach.
