Spotify Introduces ‘AI Persona’ Badge to Identify AI-Generated Music Artists

Spotify is introducing a new “AI Persona” badge to help listeners identify music profiles whose public identities are generated by artificial intelligence, as the streaming giant responds to growing concerns about authenticity in the era of generative AI.

The new label is expected to begin appearing in mid-September across selected artist profiles, search results and playlist track rows.

According to Spotify, the initiative is designed to address a growing problem on streaming platforms: photorealistic AI-generated artist personas that can appear to listeners as real human musicians.

The company says the badge will make it easier for fans to understand who—or what—is behind the artist profile they are listening to.

Spotify argues that trust between artists and listeners remains fundamental to the music industry, particularly as advances in generative AI make it increasingly difficult to distinguish between real performers and entirely artificial identities.

Under the new system, creators who operate AI-generated artist personas will be able to disclose that status themselves through the Spotify for Artists dashboard.

However, Spotify says it will not rely exclusively on voluntary disclosure.

The company’s review team will also monitor artist profiles and identify accounts that appear to use photorealistic AI-generated identities. Spotify says it will initially focus on high-traffic profiles that meet certain audience thresholds.

When Spotify’s internal team applies an AI Persona label, the account owner will reportedly be notified and given the opportunity to confirm the designation or appeal the decision.

Listeners will also be able to tap the AI Persona badge to find out whether the designation was voluntarily disclosed by the creator or applied following Spotify’s own review.

The company plans to introduce a reporting feature in the coming months, allowing listeners to flag profiles they believe may be operating as undisclosed AI personas.

Spotify is also taking a different approach to how these profiles are recommended to users.

Under the new policy, AI Personas will be excluded by default from Spotify’s editorial and algorithmic recommendation systems. Unless a listener actively chooses to follow an AI Persona, such profiles will not be included in personalised recommendation feeds.

The move is part of Spotify’s stated effort to prioritise human creators and give real artists greater opportunities to build sustainable careers on the platform.

Importantly, Spotify says the AI Persona badge is specifically about an artist’s public identity, rather than whether artificial intelligence was used somewhere in the production of a particular song.

That distinction means a real human musician who uses AI tools during the creative process would not automatically be classified as an AI Persona.

For production transparency, Spotify already uses features including AI Credits and SongDNA, which can provide information about contributors and the use of generative technology in music production.

The new badge is therefore aimed at a different question: whether the artist presented to the public actually exists as a human performer.

Spotify’s latest initiative forms part of a broader push by the company to strengthen trust and authenticity across its platform.

The streaming service already operates its “Verified by Spotify” feature, which provides a trust mark for hundreds of thousands of artist profiles. It has also introduced Artist Profile Protection, allowing artists to review and approve releases associated with their profiles in an effort to prevent misattribution and profile hijacking.

Spotify has additionally highlighted Artist Details, which provides information about an artist’s release history, touring activity and other career milestones.

The rise of generative AI has created a new challenge for music streaming companies. AI can now produce convincing vocals, artwork, artist names and entire fictional identities at a speed that would be impossible for traditional human creators.

While the technology has opened new creative possibilities, it has also raised concerns about impersonation, misleading artist profiles, streaming manipulation and whether AI-generated acts could crowd out musicians who depend on streaming platforms for income.

Spotify says its recommendation systems are continuously adjusted to promote human artists while filtering spam, low-effort content and unverified uploads.

The introduction of the AI Persona badge represents another step in that effort, giving listeners more information before they decide whether to follow or engage with an artist.

For musicians, the development could also signal a broader shift in how streaming platforms distinguish between human creativity and synthetic entertainment.

As AI-generated music becomes increasingly sophisticated, Spotify’s message is that transparency will become an increasingly important part of the relationship between artists and their audiences.
