Sunderland have reached an agreement with Toulouse to sign highly rated French defender Dayann Méthalie in a deal that could rise to €30 million, marking a major statement of intent from the Premier League club ahead of the new season.
The agreement is understood to be worth €28 million in guaranteed payments, with a further €2 million available through performance related add ons. Méthalie had already reached an agreement over personal terms with Sunderland several days ago, and the remaining formalities are now being completed. His medical and travel arrangements are reportedly being scheduled before the transfer can be officially concluded.
The move represents a significant investment in a player who has emerged rapidly from Toulouse’s academy and established himself in Ligue 1. At just 20 years old, Méthalie has attracted interest from several clubs across Europe, with Sunderland ultimately moving decisively to secure his signature.
The Frenchman is capable of playing as a left back, left wing back or left sided centre back, making his versatility one of the biggest attractions for Sunderland manager Régis Le Bris. His ability to operate in different defensive systems could prove particularly valuable as the Black Cats prepare for the demands of both domestic and European football.
Born in Toulouse in 2006, Méthalie has spent much of his footballing life with the local club. He began his development at US Colomiers before joining the Toulouse academy as a youngster. His progression through the club’s youth system eventually led to a professional contract in September 2024.
Rather than taking a conventional route through several clubs, Méthalie developed patiently within Toulouse’s system before making the jump to senior football.
His Ligue 1 breakthrough arrived in August 2025 when he was handed his professional debut against Nice. Toulouse won the match 1 0, giving the young defender an impressive introduction to top flight football.
The 2025/26 season was where Méthalie’s reputation truly began to grow.
He made 27 Ligue 1 appearances for Toulouse and scored twice, contributing to a campaign that saw the club finish ninth in the French top flight. His performances were enough to convince several clubs that he possessed the potential to develop into a high level European defender.
One of the most appealing aspects of Méthalie’s game is his physical profile. Standing around 1.86 metres tall, he possesses the size and strength to compete in defensive situations while retaining the mobility required to operate at full back. His versatility means he can be used as a traditional defender or pushed higher up the pitch when a team adopts a more attacking approach.
His development has also been recognised by the French national team setup.
Méthalie has represented France at youth level, featuring for the Under 19s before progressing to the Under 20 and Under 21 teams. He has made four appearances for France Under 21 and scored twice, further highlighting the regard in which he is held within French football.
Sunderland’s interest in the defender is not new.
The Black Cats had reportedly been pursuing Méthalie for several weeks, with negotiations proving difficult as Toulouse attempted to protect the value of one of their most promising young players. Newcastle United had also monitored the defender closely, while other European clubs were believed to have shown interest.
At one stage, Toulouse reportedly rejected a proposal worth €33 million, demonstrating how complicated the negotiations had become. Sunderland nevertheless continued discussions and have now reached an agreement based around €28 million guaranteed plus €2 million in potential bonuses.
For Sunderland, the signing comes at an important moment.
The club are preparing for their return to European competition after finishing seventh in the Premier League last season. Their Europa League involvement means Le Bris will need greater depth across the squad, particularly in defensive areas where injuries and fixture congestion can quickly become major problems.
Méthalie’s arrival would therefore provide Sunderland with another young, versatile option who can cover multiple positions.
The French defender could immediately compete for the starting left back position, although Sunderland are unlikely to rush him into a demanding Premier League schedule. His experience in Ligue 1 should help with the transition, but English football brings a different level of physical intensity and speed.
The reported five year contract would also give Sunderland plenty of time to develop the youngster. According to reports, the proposed agreement is expected to run until June 2031, underlining the club’s belief that Méthalie can become an important player for years to come.
For Toulouse, the deal represents another example of their ability to develop young talent and eventually generate significant transfer income.
For Méthalie, meanwhile, the move represents the biggest step of his young career.
He leaves the club where he developed as a footballer to test himself in the Premier League, one of the most competitive leagues in world football.
The challenge will be significant, but his age, versatility and Ligue 1 experience give him an excellent platform from which to begin.
If he completes his medical successfully and signs the final documents, Méthalie will become one of Sunderland’s most expensive young defensive recruits and one of the key additions to Le Bris’ squad.
