Tensions and hopes: Iran assembles expert team for critical U.S. talks in Muscat
DDM News

Iran has confirmed it will send a full delegation to indirect talks with the United States in Muscat on Sunday.
The fourth round of these sensitive negotiations will take place in the capital of Oman on May 11, 2025, Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathers.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei announced the decision during a press conference in Tehran on Saturday.
He emphasized that Iran’s delegation will include technical and policy experts to address the complexity of the discussions.
“These talks matter, and we are prepared,” Baghaei said, stressing Tehran’s serious approach to the ongoing diplomatic process.
However, Baghaei avoided questions about whether the United States would also send technical experts to the meeting.
“I can only speak about our own delegation,” he told reporters, declining to speculate on Washington’s level of representation.
His comments came after CNN reported that the U.S. technical team might not attend this round of negotiations.
The absence of American specialists, if true, could limit the scope and effectiveness of the Muscat discussions.
Past rounds included expert participation from both sides, allowing deeper engagement on nuclear and sanctions-related issues.
Despite this, Iran’s move to send a full team signals determination to maintain momentum in the indirect dialogue.
These talks, mediated by regional and international partners, aim to reduce tensions between Tehran and Washington.
Key topics include Iran’s nuclear program, regional influence, and the lifting of U.S.-imposed economic sanctions.
Oman, acting as a neutral host, has a long history of facilitating confidential discussions between rival nations.
Muscat has previously provided a discreet platform for delicate diplomatic exchanges between Iran and the United States.
Baghaei did not share details about the delegation members or the specific items on the negotiation agenda.
Analysts say Iran wants to show seriousness without appearing weak or desperate for sanctions relief.
Meanwhile, the U.S. may be cautious, facing internal political divisions over any major diplomatic compromise.
The reported absence of American technical staff has sparked concern over the depth of possible progress.
Nonetheless, the Muscat meeting may offer both nations a chance to gauge intentions and maintain contact.
The region remains tense, and both sides face pressure to engage without appearing to retreat from core demands.
What emerges from these talks could determine the next phase of U.S.-Iran relations, and the stakes are undeniably high.
