Tinubu Took Bullets for Nigeria to Survive, Says Presidential Aide Amid Reform Defence

A presidential aide has described President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as a leader who “took bullets for Nigeria to survive,” insisting that the administration’s tough economic and political decisions were necessary sacrifices to prevent a deeper national crisis.

The statement was made as the presidency continues to defend its policy direction nearly three years into Tinubu’s administration, which has been defined by sweeping reforms in the economy, subsidy removal, and foreign exchange liberalisation.

According to the aide, the President deliberately chose what he called “painful but necessary reforms” that have exposed the administration to criticism but are ultimately aimed at rebuilding Nigeria’s long term economic stability.

He argued that the current hardship being experienced by citizens is part of a broader adjustment process that will eventually reposition the country for sustainable growth and improved governance outcomes.

The aide further described Tinubu as a leader who was willing to absorb political backlash in order to implement reforms that previous administrations had avoided due to their sensitive nature and potential public resistance.

He maintained that decisions such as fuel subsidy removal and exchange rate unification were critical steps to correct long standing structural distortions in the Nigerian economy.

According to him, these measures have helped reduce fiscal pressure on government resources while improving transparency in key economic processes.

He also noted that while the reforms initially triggered inflationary pressures and economic adjustment challenges, early indicators now suggest gradual stabilisation in key sectors such as revenue generation and foreign investment inflows.

The presidency insists that the administration remains focused on long term national recovery rather than short term political popularity.

The aide added that President Tinubu has consistently demonstrated political courage since assuming office on May 29, 2023, stressing that leadership requires difficult decisions that may not always be immediately popular but are necessary for national survival.

He further stated that the administration is working across multiple sectors including infrastructure, security, agriculture, health, and education to ensure that the benefits of ongoing reforms eventually reach ordinary Nigerians.

On security, the aide reiterated that government efforts have led to intensified military operations against insurgents, bandits, and other criminal groups, resulting in improved coordination among security agencies and gradual restoration of stability in affected areas.

He also pointed to ongoing investments in intelligence gathering and equipment upgrades aimed at strengthening national security architecture.

In the economic sector, the presidency highlighted reforms aimed at improving tax collection efficiency, reducing wasteful spending, and expanding the non oil revenue base of the country.

The aide maintained that despite public criticism, the administration remains confident that its policies will yield long term benefits in the form of job creation, infrastructure development, and improved living standards.

He appealed for patience from Nigerians, noting that major economic transformations often come with temporary hardship before long term stability is achieved.

The remarks come amid ongoing national debate over the impact of Tinubu’s reform agenda, with citizens expressing mixed reactions over rising living costs and structural changes in the economy.

While critics argue that the reforms have increased economic pressure on households, supporters of the administration insist that they are necessary steps to correct decades of policy inefficiencies.

The presidency, however, continues to maintain that the country is on a path to recovery and that the most difficult phase of the reform process is gradually giving way to stabilization.
