U.S. President Donald Trump, on Monday, January 20, 2025, called for stronger sanctions against Russian President Vladimir Putin while tragic events unfold elsewhere, including the deaths of a mother and child in Chibok, Nigeria, following a deadly bombing by the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) on Sunday, January 19, 2025.
Diaspora digital media (DDM) gathered that a civilian vehicle struck an improvised explosive device (IED) reportedly planted by ISWAP, resulting in multiple casualties.
Numerous passengers were injured, and the vehicle, along with nearby structures, was destroyed in the explosion.
Trump, commenting on global conflicts, stated that President Putin must prioritize negotiations to end the war in Ukraine, adding that failing to do so could invite further sanctions from the United States.
The IED in Chibok was allegedly intended to ambush military vehicles but instead claimed the lives of innocent civilians, including a mother and her baby.
Survivors, including the deceased mother’s sister, are receiving treatment at Chibok General Hospital.
Residents of Sikarkur village, where the incident occurred, lamented the frequency of such attacks.
A local villager disclosed, DDM, “This happens daily here, and many incidents go unreported.”
Trump, speaking on broader security challenges, criticized the ongoing violence in various parts of the world, linking it to inadequate global interventions.
He emphasized the need for strong measures to curb such atrocities.
Meanwhile, the attack in Chibok highlights the persistent danger posed by Boko Haram and ISWAP, who continue to use IEDs and ambushes to target military personnel and destabilize communities in Northern Nigeria.
This latest bombing follows other recent attacks by ISWAP on neighboring villages, including a violent assault on January 15, 2025, which left many displaced and several properties destroyed.
Trump’s remarks on global peacekeeping efforts also touched on Ukraine.
On January 21, 2025, he suggested deploying European peacekeepers to prevent a resurgence of Russian aggression after any ceasefire.
