BENIN CITY, EDO STATE — Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force have arrested two suspected armed robbers following a violent raid on a hotel in Benin City, Edo State, during which guests and staff were allegedly dispossessed of valuables before security intervention led to their capture.
The suspects, identified as Mustapha Haruna and Abdullahi Abdulrahman, were apprehended shortly after the incident following a coordinated response triggered by distress calls from the hotel management and eyewitness reports.
According to preliminary accounts, the attackers allegedly gained access to the hotel premises and proceeded to threaten occupants while demanding valuables such as phones, cash, and other personal items.
The operation reportedly caused panic among guests, with some temporarily taking cover while others alerted nearby residents and security personnel.
Police operatives were said to have mobilized quickly to the scene, cordoning off surrounding areas as part of efforts to prevent the suspects from escaping.
A follow-up operation reportedly led to the arrest of the two suspects within Benin City, with officers recovering items believed to have been stolen during the raid.
Recovered exhibits are said to include mobile phones and other valuables, though authorities are yet to provide a comprehensive list of the items retrieved.
Security officials described the arrest as part of ongoing efforts to combat armed robbery and violent crime in hospitality and public spaces across Edo State.
Hotel environments, according to security analysts, often require stronger monitoring systems due to the constant movement of guests and limited ability to track all individuals entering and exiting facilities.
They also stressed the importance of installing CCTV surveillance systems, improving access control, and ensuring rapid communication channels between hotels and nearby police divisions.
Residents in Benin City have continued to express concern over recurring incidents of robbery targeting commercial establishments and public facilities.
Some community members have called for increased night patrols and more visible police presence in high-risk areas to deter criminal activity.
Police authorities are reportedly intensifying investigations to determine whether the suspects are linked to other robbery cases within Edo State or neighboring communities.
Officials also indicated that further interrogation may help uncover possible accomplices or broader criminal networks operating in the region.
The suspects are expected to be charged to court upon completion of investigations, in line with established legal procedures.
As investigations progress, attention remains focused on security reforms aimed at strengthening public safety and reducing incidents of violent crime across Edo State.
