US Lawmaker Calls for Stronger Action on Plateau Violence, Urges Trump to Intervene

A United States lawmaker has urged stronger international attention and a more decisive response to the recurring wave of violent attacks in Plateau State, Nigeria, calling on former US President Donald Trump to take a more forceful position on the escalating security situation in the region.

The appeal comes in the wake of renewed attacks in several communities in Plateau State, which have resulted in significant casualties, displacement of residents, and growing concerns over the worsening security crisis in Nigeria’s North Central region.

In a statement reacting to the developments, the US lawmaker expressed deep concern over what he described as a persistent cycle of violence in Plateau communities, warning that continued insecurity could further destabilize the region and deepen humanitarian challenges affecting rural populations.

He noted that the scale and recurrence of the attacks have gone beyond isolated incidents, arguing that the situation now requires sustained international attention and coordinated pressure to compel more effective action from Nigerian authorities and global partners.

The lawmaker specifically called on Donald Trump to take a more visible stance on the issue, stating that influential global leaders have the capacity to draw attention to crises that may otherwise not receive adequate international focus. According to him, heightened political engagement from prominent figures could help accelerate diplomatic conversations and security responses.

Recent attacks in Plateau State have reportedly left dozens of people dead, while several others sustained injuries. Entire communities have also been displaced, with many residents forced to abandon their homes due to fear of further violence. Humanitarian conditions in affected areas have continued to deteriorate as displaced families struggle to access basic necessities such as shelter, food, and medical care.

Security agencies in Nigeria have intensified operations in response to the attacks, deploying personnel to affected communities and conducting patrols aimed at restoring calm and preventing further escalation. Despite these efforts, reports of fresh incidents in different parts of the state have continued to raise concerns about the effectiveness of current security measures.

Plateau State has long been identified as one of the flashpoints of communal and armed violence in Nigeria’s Middle Belt region. The crisis in the area has been linked to a complex mix of factors, including longstanding ethnic tensions, disputes over land ownership, competition between farming and pastoral communities, and retaliatory attacks that have persisted for years.

Efforts by successive governments to address the insecurity have included the establishment of peace committees, deployment of security forces, and engagement with traditional and community leaders. However, these interventions have often struggled to produce lasting stability, as new waves of violence continue to emerge intermittently.

Human rights organisations and international observers have repeatedly expressed concern over the humanitarian impact of the crisis, particularly on women, children, and displaced persons who remain vulnerable in camps and host communities with limited access to essential services.

The latest call from the US lawmaker adds to a growing list of international reactions to the security situation in Nigeria, with some members of the US Congress in previous statements condemning attacks in Plateau and other parts of the country. These lawmakers have also called for stronger Nigerian government action and improved protection of civilians in vulnerable regions.

Security analysts argue that the persistence of violence in Plateau State highlights the need for more comprehensive approaches beyond military deployment, including stronger intelligence gathering, improved rural policing, conflict resolution mechanisms, and community based reconciliation efforts.

The Nigerian government has consistently maintained that it is committed to addressing insecurity across the country. Authorities have reiterated that security agencies are working to neutralize armed groups responsible for attacks and restore stability to affected communities.

Officials have also encouraged residents to cooperate with security forces by providing timely and credible information that could assist in preventing further incidents and identifying perpetrators of violence.

However, despite ongoing military and security operations, the recurrence of attacks has continued to raise questions among citizens and stakeholders about the effectiveness of existing strategies and the need for more sustainable solutions.

As international attention grows following renewed calls from foreign lawmakers, including the appeal directed at Donald Trump, the situation in Plateau State remains a focal point of concern within diplomatic and security circles.

Observers say the renewed global spotlight could increase pressure on Nigerian authorities to accelerate reforms and strengthen efforts aimed at addressing the root causes of violence in the region while improving protection for affected communities.
