Veteran Nollywood Actor and Professor Kola Oyewo Dies at 80

Nigeria’s entertainment and academic communities are mourning the loss of veteran Nollywood actor and respected scholar, Professor Kola Oyewo, who passed away on Friday, June 12, at the age of 80.

Born Professor Adekola Akangbe Gabriel Oyewo, the late icon was widely regarded as a towering figure in Nigerian theatre, cinema, and academia, with a career that spanned over six decades.

His death was announced by fellow actor Kunle Afod via Instagram, where he paid tribute to Oyewo’s remarkable legacy. Afod described him as a “true legend” whose immense contributions to the Nigerian film and theatre industry will continue to inspire generations. The cause of death has not been disclosed.

Kola Oyewo began his journey in the arts in 1964 with the legendary Oyin Adejobi Theatre Group, where he made his debut in Orogun Adedigba. After nearly a decade with the troupe, he transitioned to the University of Ife Theatre, working alongside renowned dramatist Chief Ola Rotimi.

It was during this period that Oyewo gained widespread acclaim for his iconic portrayal of “Odewale” in Rotimi’s classic play, The Gods Are Not to Blame, a role that cemented his status as a master of stage performance.

In addition to his success on stage and screen, Oyewo made significant strides in academia. Demonstrating exceptional dedication, he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Theatre Arts from Obafemi Awolowo University in 1995, followed by a Master’s degree and a PhD in Drama from the University of Ibadan.

He later joined the academic staff of Obafemi Awolowo University in 1996, rising to the rank of Senior Lecturer before retiring in 2011. He also served as Head of the Department of Dramatic Arts at Redeemer’s University and continued lecturing at Elizade University.

On screen, Oyewo featured in several Nollywood classics, including Saworoide, Sango, Koseegbe, and the popular television series Super Story. His commanding presence and deep cultural insight made him a respected figure in Nigerian storytelling.

Beyond his performances, Oyewo is remembered for bridging the gap between traditional Yoruba travelling theatre, modern Nigerian cinema, and academic scholarship.

His passing marks the end of an era, but his legacy lives on through his body of work and the many students and actors he mentored throughout his lifetime.

Professor Kola Oyewo is survived by family, colleagues, and a generation of admirers who continue to celebrate his enduring impact on Nigerian arts and culture.
