Media personality Daddy Freeze has responded to criticism over his choice of outfit at the recent service of songs held in honour of Nollywood actor Alexx Ekubo.
The event, which had an all-white dress code, drew attention after Daddy Freeze arrived dressed in black. Addressing the backlash, he explained that he believed the gathering was a mourning event for a young man whose life had been cut short.
“I thought we were mourning a young man whose life was cut short. I didn’t know for service of songs, I was supposed to wear white,” he said.
Beyond the controversy surrounding his outfit, Daddy Freeze also revealed that he did not stay long at the event. According to him, he chose to leave after gospel singer Mercy Chinwo’s performance, which he felt changed the tone of the gathering.
In his remarks, he suggested that the ceremony began to feel more like a concert than a solemn tribute, stating, “She turned the ceremony into a concert.”
His comments have since sparked mixed reactions online. While some supporters agree with his perspective on maintaining a more reflective atmosphere at memorial events, others argue that services of songs are often celebratory, blending worship, music, and remembrance.
The incident adds to the ongoing conversations surrounding the nature of tribute events in Nigeria’s entertainment industry, where the line between mourning and celebration can sometimes blur.
