ABUJA, Nigeria — The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has said recent comments by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, directed at former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, reflect what it described as growing fear of the opposition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement released by the party, the ADC argued that Wike’s attacks on Amaechi were politically motivated and aimed at diverting public attention from issues of governance, the economy and security. According to the party, personal attacks on political opponents cannot erase Amaechi’s contributions to public service or weaken the growing resolve of opposition parties across the country.
The ADC maintained that the minister’s remarks demonstrate increasing concern within the ruling political establishment over the emergence of a stronger opposition capable of providing Nigerians with an alternative platform in the next general election. It stated that rather than engage in personal criticisms, political leaders should focus on addressing the country’s pressing challenges and presenting practical solutions to citizens.
According to the party, Amaechi has served Nigeria in several important capacities, including as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Governor of Rivers State and Minister of Transportation. The ADC argued that his record in public office remains part of the country’s democratic history and cannot be diminished through political rhetoric or verbal exchanges.
The opposition party stressed that democracy thrives on healthy competition, constructive criticism and the free exchange of ideas. It noted that disagreements among political leaders should be centred on policies, programmes and governance rather than personal attacks capable of distracting Nigerians from issues affecting their daily lives.
The ADC further stated that millions of Nigerians are currently more concerned about inflation, unemployment, insecurity, poverty, rising food prices and the general cost of living than political disputes between prominent politicians. It urged leaders across party lines to devote greater attention to addressing these national concerns instead of engaging in exchanges that offer little benefit to the public.
According to the party, opposition politics plays a vital role in strengthening democracy by holding governments accountable and offering alternative policy options. It maintained that criticism of government actions should be viewed as part of the democratic process and not as hostility toward those in authority.
Political analysts note that exchanges among leading political figures have become increasingly common as political parties gradually begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 elections. Observers believe such statements reflect the intensifying political atmosphere as parties prepare for campaigns, alliance-building and policy debates expected to dominate the coming months.
The ADC called on all political stakeholders to conduct their activities peacefully and responsibly while respecting differing opinions. It urged politicians to engage voters through issue-based campaigns focused on governance, economic development, security, education, healthcare and infrastructure rather than personal attacks against opponents.
The party concluded by expressing confidence that Nigerians will ultimately determine the outcome of future elections based on the performance, competence and credibility of candidates. It insisted that attempts to discredit opposition leaders through political rhetoric would not prevent democratic competition or weaken the determination of opposition parties to present their programmes and vision to the electorate ahead of the 2027 general elections.
