2027: ADC Faction Unveils Chris Uba as Presidential Candidate

A faction of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has announced businessman and academic, Prof. Chris Uba, as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election following the completion of its nationwide primary elections.

The development comes barely a week after another wing of the party produced former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as its presidential flag bearer after a contest involving former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi and ex-banker Mohammed Hayatu-Deen.

At a ceremony held in Abuja on Sunday, the faction led by National Chairman Bala Gombe formally presented Uba alongside 29 governorship candidates who emerged from the party’s primaries across the country.

Explaining the process that led to Uba’s emergence, Gombe said the party had decided to zone its presidential ticket to the southern region in line with the principles of equity, fairness, inclusiveness and federal character.

According to him, three aspirants initially purchased nomination forms to contest for the ticket — Dr. Bashir Sani, Prince Williams Charles and Prof. Chris Uba.

Gombe said the party eventually adopted the consensus option provided under the Electoral Act, leading to the withdrawal of the other two aspirants in support of Uba.

“In line with the provisions of the Electoral Act and in the interest of party unity, the ADC adopted consensus as the method for selecting candidates for various elective positions,” he said.

“Following consultations, two presidential aspirants voluntarily stepped down and endorsed Prof. Chris Uba, making him the party’s sole presidential candidate and flag bearer for the 2027 election.”

The factional chairman also announced that the party had successfully concluded its governorship, National Assembly and State House of Assembly primaries nationwide.

He described the exercise as peaceful, transparent and conducted in compliance with the Constitution, the Electoral Act and the party’s internal guidelines.

Among those unveiled as governorship candidates were Muhammad Usman Shuwa (Adamawa), Idris Adamu Yanoko (Kano), Shamsudin Muhammad (Kaduna), Ibrahim Al-Ameen Gumi (Zamfara), Babagana Mala (Borno), Musliu Babadele (Lagos), Ganiyu Alabi (Ogun), Rukayya Salami (Osun), Gbenga Gbenga (Oyo), Gada Suswan (Benue), Dijatu Abdul Salam (Nasarawa) and Christopher Benjo (Delta).

Gombe said the official presentation was intended to showcase all candidates who emerged through the party’s internal democratic process and reaffirm the faction’s readiness for the 2027 elections.

The announcement adds another layer to the growing political realignments ahead of the 2027 polls, as parties intensify consultations, coalition-building efforts and candidate positioning across the country.

Founded in 2005, the African Democratic Congress has participated in several election cycles and has recently intensified efforts to expand its influence by strengthening its structures and attracting new members nationwide.
