2027: PDP Moves to Woo Jonathan for Presidential Comeback

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has officially invited former President Goodluck Jonathan to contest the 2027 presidential election.
According to a BBC Hausa report monitored on Tuesday, August 5, PDP’s Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Ibrahim Abdullahi, confirmed the invitation.
He explained that the party believes Jonathan remains a respected leader with wide public support.
Jonathan previously served as Nigeria’s president from 2010 to 2015.
However, he lost his re-election bid to former President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015.
Now, a growing number of PDP leaders want him to return and lead the party into the 2027 elections.
Abdullahi stated that the PDP extended the invitation because many Nigerians have also urged Jonathan to return.
He described Jonathan as a man of peace who once placed the nation above his own ambition.
He noted that Jonathan never interfered with the 2015 electoral process.
Unlike past leaders who clung to power, Jonathan peacefully handed over after losing the election.
That decision, Abdullahi argued, proved Jonathan’s integrity and love for the country.
In response, Jonathan reportedly showed interest but asked for time to consult widely.
According to Abdullahi, the former president said he would consider the offer carefully before making any final decision.
However, Jonathan gave certain conditions. One of them is that the PDP must guarantee him an automatic presidential ticket if he accepts.
Despite this, he emphasized the need for internal consultations.
Meanwhile, PDP sources revealed that some governors traveled with Jonathan to Gambia last week.
He attended an event there, and the trip provided more opportunities for talks about his return to politics.
So far, PDP insiders remain hopeful. They believe that Jonathan’s possible return will boost the party’s chances in 2027.
With internal divisions and defections rocking the party in recent months, his candidacy could unify its base.
As 2027 draws closer, the PDP continues to weigh its best strategy.
However, Jonathan’s response could shape the future of the opposition party and alter Nigeria’s political landscape once again.
