FIFA Ranking: Morocco maintains Africa’s top spot
Morocco has maintained the top spot in Africa in latest FIFA ranking, according to the result published on the world football regulating body’s website on Thursday, February 15, 2024.
The publication also showed Nigeria ranking above African Champions, Côte d’Ivoire, despite losing the trophy to the hosts at the recently concluded Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The championship saw Côte d’Ivoire taking the trophy after beating Nigeria 2-1 in the last game of the tournament.
The championship also saw Africa’s number one footballing nation, Morocco, knocked out by South Africa in the second round to reach quarter-final.
Meanwhile, former champions, Senegal, held on to the second spot in Africa despite a second round AFCON exit.
The host nation, featuring Elephants, once again trampled on their West African neighbours to reach quarter-finals.
They beat the defending champions 5-4 in penalties after a 1-1 draw.
Eight countries from Africa made the FIFA top fifty ranking.
Out of the eight, four are from West Africa while the remaining four are from North Africa.

Meanwhile, Argentina maintained the top spot in the global ranking, with France and England trailing behind.

In the meantime, Nigeria’s president, Bola Tinubu, has coffered national honours on all members of the Super Eagles squad that won the silver medal at the AFCON in Cote d’Ivoire.
According to reports, the president also granted a plot of land in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and a flat to each of them for the feat at the just concluded competition.
