Multi-Choice to Appeal Court Ruling on Free Subscription and N150 Million Fine

Published

on

Multi-Choice Nigeria, a leading pay-TV company, has announced its intention to appeal a recent ruling by the Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal (CCPT).

The tribunal had ordered the company to provide a one-month free subscription to its customers on DStv and GOtv, in addition to a N150 million fine.

The ruling was a result of a lawsuit filed by Festus Onifade, who argued that Multi-Choice had increased its subscription fees without adequate notice to customers.

The tribunal had previously restrained the company from effecting the price increase, pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice.

In a statement, Multi-Choice Nigeria expressed its disagreement with the ruling and announced its intention to file an appeal.

The company stated that it was restrained from making further comments on the matter, as it was currently sub judice.

The tribunal’s ruling had been a victory for consumers, who had been affected by the company’s decision to increase its subscription fees without adequate notice.

The ruling was seen as a significant step in protecting consumer rights and promoting fair competition in the market.

However, Multi-Choice Nigeria’s decision to appeal the ruling may delay the implementation of the tribunal’s decision.

The company’s appeal may be based on its argument that the tribunal lacked jurisdiction to entertain the matter, or that the ruling was unjust and unreasonable.

The appeal process is likely to be closely watched by consumers and industry stakeholders, who are eager to see the outcome of the case.

If the appeal is successful, it may have significant implications for consumer protection and competition policy in Nigeria.

In the meantime, customers of DStv and GOtv may have to wait longer to enjoy the one-month free subscription ordered by the tribunal.
