KADUNA, NIGERIA — A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and senatorial aspirant for Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani, has called on political leaders in Northern Nigeria to respect the principle of power rotation and political equity ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Sani made the appeal while speaking on the need for fairness, inclusivity, and balance in Nigeria’s political arrangement, particularly as parties begin early preparations for the next election cycle.

He stressed that respecting rotational principles remains key to maintaining national unity and reducing political tension across regions.

According to him, political stability is strengthened when leaders ensure that no region feels marginalised in the distribution of elective offices.

The former senator argued that equity and fairness should guide political decisions, especially in a diverse country like Nigeria.

He noted that the North must play a responsible role in sustaining democratic balance by supporting arrangements that promote inclusion and shared leadership.

Sani’s remarks come at a time when political conversations are intensifying across the country ahead of the 2027 elections.

Analysts say discussions around zoning, rotation, and power sharing are expected to dominate political discourse in the coming months.

The APC chieftain also emphasised the importance of dialogue among political stakeholders to prevent internal divisions within parties.

He warned that ignoring the principle of fairness could deepen political mistrust and weaken national cohesion.

Political observers note that debates around rotation have historically influenced candidate selection and party strategies in Nigeria.

Sani’s position reflects ongoing concerns among stakeholders about how to balance regional interests in a multi-ethnic political system.

Supporters of rotation argue that it helps maintain stability and ensures broader participation in governance.

Critics, however, often argue that merit and competence should remain the primary criteria for leadership selection.

Despite differing views, the principle continues to play a significant role in Nigeria’s electoral politics.

As the 2027 election approaches, political actors are increasingly engaging in discussions about zoning arrangements and power distribution.

Sani’s call adds to the growing conversation about how parties can manage internal expectations while maintaining national unity.

The development is expected to influence political negotiations and alignments in the months ahead as parties prepare for upcoming contests.
